PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Rene Lafayette (ranked 173 p4p, 1004 weight class) and Konrad Wagner (ranked 24 p4p, 146 weight class). Chooooooooon! I think Lafayette might be my favorite fighter, now he's come out to Erasure - Always. Konrad Wagner acknowledges the crowd's support as he enters the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 13 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Rene Lafayette!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 8 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Konrad Wagner!
The judges for this bout are Jack Bonds, Don Winkell and Percy O'Donnell.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Lafayette displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as Wagner throws out the jab.
Lafayette clobbers Wagner with an overhand right that has the crowd gasping. That made a horrendous noise.
Lafayette keeping his hands up high there, blocking the jab from Wagner.
An inside leg kick lands from Wagner.
Lafayette fakes a head shot and lands one to the body.
Wagner throws a hook to the side of Lafayette's head but Lafayette sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.
Wagner throws an overhand right that lands on Lafayette's shoulder, as Lafayette tries to avoid the shot.
Lafayette connects with a jab.
Lafayette scores with a jab to the body.
Lafayette moving in and out of range nicely, whilst landing the scoring shot.
A punch lands to the side of Wagner 's head but he takes it in his stride.
Lafayette steps to the side to avoid the strikes from Wagner.
Nice uppercut lands for Lafayette. That snapped Wagner's head back.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

We've been hearing reports that Lafayette has been drilling takedowns in recent sessions so let's see if that has an impact on the result of this fight.

and Wagner counters with a body kick that stops Lafayette in his tracks momentarily.

Wagner throws a leg kick which misses Lafayette's front leg but catches the back leg as Lafayette tries to avoid it.

Wagner throws a shot from downtown. Lafayette moves away and avoids it.
Wagner ducks under an overhand right and circles away with a smile on his face.

Lafayette throws a jab when Wagner was well out of range.
Lafayette lands a vicious shot with the stealth of a sniper and the strength of a viper. Are vipers that strong? I can think of lots of things that are stronger than a viper - not many rhyme with sniper though.
Lafayette looks shocked there as he takes a right hand to the temple.
Lafayette ducks under a wild hook from Wagner.
Lafayette keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.
A looping hook to the body misses from Lafayette. Wagner does a little dance to reset his feet.
Wagner drops his hands momentarily and Lafayette takes advantage with a crisp shot to the head.
Wagner throws a hook but Lafayette avoids it easily.
Wagner takes a swing at Lafayette's ribcage but misses.

Lafayette lands with a cross.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Wagner throws a hook but Lafayette blocks it.
Lafayette swung with a counter right hand that didn't connect.
A telegraphed right hand from Lafayette misses the target.
Wagner throws a body shot but no joy.
Lafayette was looking to counter that move with a punch but didn't quite pull the trigger.
Wagner with poor footwork there. He got himself in a bit of a tangle, enabling Lafayette to score with a decent uppercut.

and Wagner counters with a nice uppercut.
Lafayette throws a lazy right hand but Wagner sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily.

Lafayette shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard.
Lafayette is trying to control the action in half guard but Wagner is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.

Wagner is trying to control but can't.

Lafayette seems to be working for a kimura but Wagner defends the submission attempt.
Lafayette passes to side control.

Lafayette tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Lafayette has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!
Wagner tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Lafayette wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Lafayette is moving around in side control but his primary objective seems to be to maintain the position.
Wagner is trying to improve his position.
Wagner manages to work his way to half guard, despite Lafayette's best efforts.
Wagner has been taking part in the yoga sessions down at CT. Presumably he's going to look for a slick submission... Or maybe he's looking to avoid one.

Lafayette is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.
Wagner is trying to control but Lafayette manages to pass to mount!
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!

Lafayette is really head hunting here, hardly looking to strike to the body at all.

Wagner throws a solid leg kick but Lafayette takes the impact on his shin and smiles at Wagner.

Wagner is clearly looking to counter with head kicks.

and Wagner makes him pay by landing a thudding low kick.

The sound of bone on bone echoes around the arena as Lafayette checks a leg kick.
Wagner stuns Lafayette with a nice body shot, before stepping back out of range.

Wagner lands a big head kick that sends Lafayette tumbling to the mat! Wagner takes a step backwards and waves Lafayette back to his feet - he wants the finish!

Lafayette is rocked!

Wagner steps in with a hook that catches Lafayette right on the chin and knocks him to the floor! Wagner follows him down with more strikes and that's all she wrote! Lafayette looks absolutely devastated.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:09 of round 2, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Konrad Wagner!
During a confident post fight interview, Konrad Wagner thanked all his fans. He seemed very genuine when describing how motivated his fans keep him.
