PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Chester Drawers (ranked 389 p4p, 239 weight class) and Futoshi Matsunaga (ranked 49 p4p, 30 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 16 - 8 - 0, fighting out of London, Chester Drawers!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 33 - 17 - 2, fighting out of New York, Futoshi Matsunaga!
The judges for this bout are David Schapiro, Joseph Jones and John Kavanagh.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Drawers avoids the head kick by Matsunaga.
Drawers tries to counter with a takedown but Matsunaga is quick to defend against it.
Matsunaga throws a leg kick that is checked

so Drawers counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.
Drawers has been talking about how he's improved his wrestling in the run up to the fight so let's see if that's enough to sway the balance.

Matsunaga has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Drawers can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Matsunaga is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Drawers is just riding it out for now. Matsunaga eventually gives up the hold.

A close round but Futoshi Matsunaga will probably get the nod.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!

and Drawers counters with a shoot takedown. Matsunaga fights it but they end up in guard.

There's a bit of a scramble here and now Matsunaga is on top in guard.

Matsunaga is in full mount, looking to secure a guillotine but Drawers is surviving well by controlling Matsunaga's body position as best he can.

Matsunaga is looking to work his way around to Drawers's back. He needs to be careful though, as he's in danger of losing this dominant position.
My spies in Randall's Top Team inform me that Matsunaga has been getting involved in the gym's BJJ sparring sessions. Let's see whether that pays dividends!
Drawers is looking to improve his position but Matsunaga isn't that keen on the idea.
Drawers is squirming around, avoiding Matsunaga's attempts to control the action.
Drawers is wriggling around here but as he tries to escape, Matsunaga has taken his back.

Drawers is displaying good submission defense - not really looking in danger of submitting to the rear naked choke at the moment. That could change in an instant of course if Matsunaga gets his way!
