PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Philip Cross (ranked 6317 p4p, 4944 weight class) and Buddy Barnett (ranked 658 p4p, 569 weight class). Barnett comes into a darkened arena with his song building. Born Ready kicks in, the lights come on and the crowd goes wild! What a showman! Philip Cross has the edge in experience - let's see if he can make that count tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Philip Cross!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Buddy Barnett!
The judges for this bout are Dirk Anderson, Peter Branson and Bart Greer.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Barnett swings wildly with a couple of big hooks

and Cross counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Barnett preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.
Cross won't allow Barnett to get back to his feet.
Cross is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
Barnett is looking to stand up but Cross isn't so interested in that idea.
Barnett avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Cross is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.
Cross throwing strikes from guard but Barnett blocks nicely.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up.

Barnett swings widly with a right hand

and Cross counters by clinching up.

Cross's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.

Cross closes the distance and clinches.
Cross content to slow the pace in the clinch.

Cross escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Barnett lands a pitter patter jab to the forehead of his opponent.
Barnett misses with a hook.
Barnett blocks a head kick by Cross.
Buddy Barnett seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
A looping hook to the body misses from Barnett. Cross does a little dance to reset his feet.

Cross shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Barnett napping and manages to drive through into side control!
Barnett defending against the ground and pound.

Cross working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Cross wants to control but Barnett is keeping him busy.
Barnett is looking to get back to his feet here but Cross is keeping cool and he's managed to take Barnett's back.
Even with his hooks in, Cross manages to miss with strikes from the back.

Barnett defends a rear naked choke attempt by controlling one of Cross's arms.

I would not like to be Barnett right now.
Barnett trying to get back to his feet but Cross is in full control for now.
Cross has the hooks sunk in and you can see the will to fight slowly draining out of Barnett's body.
Cross throwing lazy shots from the back mount that aren't doing any damage.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Cross somehow managing to miss with a strike from the back.
Barnett is trying to get back to his feet but he's not managed it yet.
Cross seems to have improved his submission grappling technique since last time we saw him. Let's see if he can pull off a submission.
Barnett covering up well under a series of strikes from Cross.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Barnett is trying to stand back up.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


Cross instigates a clinch.
Barnett wants to get back to striking at distance but Cross won't allow it.
Barnett wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Cross has him pressed against the cage.
Cross blocks a punch to the side of the head.
Barnett wants to break free but Cross has control.
Barnett has had enough of the clinch and is looking to separate.
Barnett is trying to push Cross away but Cross has him pressed against the cage, so he's going nowhere.
Cross keeps control of Barnett as he tries to wriggle out of the double underhooks.

Cross manages to break the clinch.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Cross throws a hook to the side of Barnett's head but Barnett sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.
Cross tries a head kick but it misses.
Barnett connects with the punch.
Barnett throws a body shot but no joy.
Nice shot lands for Barnett.

Cross ducks right into an uppercut from Barnett.

Cross pushes Barnett up against the cage in a clinch.
Barnett wants to break free. God knows he wants to breaaaak freeee.
Barnett has had enough of the clinch and is looking to separate.

Cross pulls guard.
Barnett has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Cross is proving hard to escape from.
Cross not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Barnett stops Cross from standing up.
Cross is looking to stand back up but Barnett counters by passing into half guard. Oops... bit sloppy there by Cross.
Cross keeping control of the position.

Barnett prevents Cross from standing back up.
Cross could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.
Cross keeping hold of Barnett's head, controlling as best he can.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
A right-left combo lands from Barnett.
Nice jab there from Barnett.
Cross is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Barnett can do to turn this around?
Cross plants his feet and lands a nice head kick!

Cross closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Cross lands in his opponent's guard.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Cross accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

Cross won't allow Barnett to get back to his feet.
Barnett working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Cross.
Cross trying to control the position from guard on top but Barnett is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Cross has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
Barnett wants to stand and escape but Cross is having none of it.
Cross wants to control from the top but Barnett keeps moving.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.
Barnett is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Cross is controlling him.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Cross fails with a takedown attempt.
Cross gets cracked with a nice right hand there by Barnett.
Barnett moves into range and connects with a jab.
Cross takes one on the button.
A combination from Barnett does no damage.
Cross avoids the body shot from Barnett.
Barnett misses with a wild body shot.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Cross goes for a double leg but Barnett avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Barnett continues to drive forward.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Cross keeps control of Barnett as he tries to wriggle out of the double underhooks.
Barnett wants to break free but Cross has control.
Barnett is looking to break free of the clinch but Cross has double underhooks.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Buddy Barnett showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. Let's get this one finished - here comes the final round!

Barnett scores with a decent looking hook.
Barnett lands a head shot.
Barnett slips in close and lands a nice hook before moving back out of range.
Cross shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Barnett pinned against the cage. Barnett gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Barnett lands a lovely overhand right.
Cross has his hands up protecting his head but a hook from Barnett finds it's way round the side to connect with Cross's head.
Barnett defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Cross.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
A left lands for Barnett.
Philip Cross is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

Barnett cracks Cross with a right hand to the side of the head.

Cross is rocked!
Cross gets clipped by a big right hand and goes down spinning to the canvas! Barnett gets the back mount and begins to drop bombs on his rocked foe! Cross is too out of it to defend against the strikes and the referee jumps in to save him from the beatdown!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:15 of round 3, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Buddy Barnett!
Buddy Barnett seemed lost for words in his post fight interview but he remembered to thank his fans and directed everyone to his website.
