Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
6 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Demian Maia! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
4 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Santos Villavera! The judges for this bout are Emerson Jorge, Seu Braga and Alexandre Firmino.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Maia changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Villavera tries to avoid it but Maia manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Villavera to the ground. Villavera escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet. A jab from Villavera misses. Villavera scores with a big left there. The judges will like that one. Villavera jabbing away but nothing is landing. Maia has his head snapped back a nice jab. A little nod from Maia there as he acknowledges the shot. Villavera shoots in but doesn't get the takedown and Maia counters with a nice double leg into half guard. Villavera is trying to stand back up but Maia is controlling him
Maia is looking to take a break and control but Villavera is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom. Villavera tries to kick Maia off but Maia keeps his base steady and stays in half guard. Maia tries to pass the half guard into mount. Villavera knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt. Maia is working for a submission of some sort.
Villavera pushes Maia off looking to stand but Maia dives back in and keeps control.
Maia is working hard to pass the guard. He's done it - he's now in full mount! Trouble for Villavera!
That's one minute gone in the round. Maia is going olschool here, as he tries to force Villavera to tap using a forearm choke. This isn't 1993 though, so Villavera shrugs it off. Maia lands a big shot there that rocks Villavera but he's holding on and managing to survive for now.
Villavera is not a happy chappy… he wants out of there.
Maia trying to control but Villavera is having none of it. Maia has hold of Villavera's left arm, perhaps looking for a submission. The two fighters tussle over control of the isolated limb and Villavera manages to get his arm back to his side and away from danger.
Maia is breathing heavily. Villavera tries to buck Maia off but he can't manage it. Villavera wriggling around on the bottom manages to avoid the strikes thrown by Maia.
Villavera wants to control but Maia is having none of it.
That's two minutes gone in the round. You get the feeling that Villavera really doesn't like being in this position too much.
Villavera wants to get back to his feet but in bucking up he's left an arm hanging out! Maia has locked onto it and has pulled off a slick armbar! Villavera taps furiously! This one is all over!
