PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a super heavyweight MMA rules bout between Robin Gaia (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Brock Steiner (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Chooooooooon! I think Gaia might be my favorite fighter, now he's come out to Manowar- Battle Hymn. Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Robin Gaia!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 5 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Brock Steiner!
The judges for this bout are Edson Gomes, Matheus Silva and Felipe Paraventi.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Gaia closes the distance and clinches up with Steiner, looking for a takedown. Gaia pushes Steiner against the cage but Steiner circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Steiner thows a left - swing and a miss!
Gaia slips under a jab.

Gaia changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Steiner looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.

Gaia is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Steiner has escaped the position, nice work there.
Steiner manages to get one leg in to regain half guard.
Steiner is looking to control Gaia's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Steiner avoid being mounted?

Gaia is working for a kimura but Steiner is defending it quite comfortably.
Steiner is pressing down on Gaia's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.

Gaia drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Gaia jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

Gaia is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
Steiner really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Gaia. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Gaia tries to free his leg and advance position but Steiner is retaining full guard.
Gaia is working hard here to advance position.

Gaia drops back looking for a leg! Steiner is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Steiner manages to kick Gaia off! Gaia jumps back into Steiner's guard.
Gaia is breathing heavily.
Steiner seems keen to control Gaia's posture.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Steiner's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Steiner keeping full guard, as Gaia tries to pass.

Gaia thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
Gaia is fighting to break Steiner's control of his arms but Steiner is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.

Despite being in the dominant position, Brock Steiner just isn't active enough and the referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Steiner fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Gaia manages to avoid it.

Gaia lands an overhand left. A wild punch that just about connected.

Steiner looks to land a right hand but Gaia moved out of range.
Steiner throws a hook but Gaia avoids it easily.
Steiner swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Steiner fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Gaia manages to avoid it.
Gaia defending well as Steiner loads up on a big left hand.
Gaia shoots in and drives through. Steiner sprawls well.
Steiner pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Steiner throws the left hand but Gaia avoids the punch easily.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Gaia is defended easily by Steiner.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Robin Gaia. That's going to take a lot out of him.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
A combination from Steiner does no damage.
Steiner throws a sloppy head kick and Gaia moves out of range easily.
Steiner moves into range and lands a nice leg kick.
Steiner throws a right hand that Gaia ducks under and follows up with a left that Gaia also avoids with ease.
Steiner stuffs the takedown attempt from Gaia. Gaia gets slowly back to his feet.
Gaia keeping his hands up high there, blocking the jab from Steiner.

Steiner keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
Steiner throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Brock Steiner dominated that round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Steiner misses with an uppercut. Gaia saw that one coming.
Brock Steiner seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Gaia uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Steiner.

Gaia feints and as Steiner raises his hands in defense, Gaia changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.

Gaia pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Steiner is keeping the position for now.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Steiner has Gaia pulled in close to control his posture.
Let's hope that Steiner has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.

Steiner might want to mix his strikes up a bit more. He's just going for head shots at the moment and that can become a bit predictable.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Steiner tries to bum rush Gaia with a series of wild strikes but Gaia uses good footwork to avoid the assault.

Steiner rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Gaia moves out of range and avoids them all easily.

Steiner throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Steiner looks to land a body kick but Gaia moved away.
Gaia closes this distance looking for a takedown but Steiner circles away.
Steiner misses with a jab, cross combination.
Steiner is really struggling to land any decent head shots against his taller opponent.
Gaia shoots in for a double leg but Steiner sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.

Gaia shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Oh and he's advanced to full mount straight away.
Gaia is looking to work his way around to Steiner's back. He needs to be careful though, as he's in danger of losing this dominant position.

Gaia is working for a guillotine from mount but Steiner frees his head quite easily.

Steiner is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.

Gaia is looking for a triangle here but Steiner uses the submission attempt to pass into side control.

The referee asks Steiner politely if he wouldn't mind getting on with it and actually doing something. Steiner prefers to stall for the moment though.
Gaia is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard.
Gaia wants to improve his position but Steiner is controlling well.

Robin Gaia dominated that second round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.
