CACC 188: Arias vs Cole PBP Commentary |
This TWGC bout is 1 fifteen minute round in the lightweight division. Introducing today's competitors. In the red corner, competing out of Amsterdam, with a TWGC record of 31 wins and 18 losses; George Arias! And in the blue corner, fighting out of New York, with a TWGC record of 4 wins and 1 losses; Rico Cole! The judges for this bout are Gwen Towbar, Frank Dennis and Alan Glass.
The fighters bow as they face eachother in the middle of the mat and we are under way. Cole is looking to clinch but Arias is avoiding it.
We've been hearing reports that Arias has been drilling takedowns in recent sessions so let's see if that has an impact on the result of this fight. Arias scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground. Score +2 for takedown into guard / half guard: Arias (2) vs (0) Cole Arias is keen to just control but Cole is a slippery customer. Arias is working hard to pass the guard. He's done it - he's now in full mount! Trouble for Cole! Score +3 for passing guard: Arias (5) vs (0) Cole Cole is squirming around, avoiding Arias's attempts to control the action. Cole is controlling an arm, preventing Arias from taking his back. Although keeping him in mount is no better to be honest.
The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring. Cole is hanging on here. He's in a desperate position. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Cole is trying desperately to improve position.

Arias looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding. Cole tries to get to full guard but Arias has control of the leg.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Arias wants to take a breather but Cole is having none of it. Cole wants to improve his position but Arias is controlling well.

Arias not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up. Cole lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard. Score +2 for sweep to guard / half guard: Arias (8) vs (2) Cole Cole preventing the sweep. Arias looking to sweep using the butterfly guard but Cole puts pay to that idea as he passes nicely into half guard. Cole is trying to control the action in half guard but Arias is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.

My spies in Shao Kahns Training Facility inform me that Cole has been getting involved in the gym's BJJ sparring sessions. Let's see whether that pays dividends! Arias is looking for a sweep. Cole is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position. Cole takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position. Cole is looking to take a break and control but Arias is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom. Arias moves into full guard.

Arias has his foot on Cole's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Cole works his way back into a safe position though.
That's ten minutes gone in the round. Arias is trying to control the position but Cole postures up. Arias lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard. Arias is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Cole is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Cole has escaped and now he's on top! Score +2 for sweep to guard / half guard: Arias (10) vs (4) Cole Cole pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Arias is keeping the position for now. Cole is pushing down on Arias's leg trying to pass to half guard. Arias is fighting to maintain full guard but Cole has managed to sneak the leg through.
That's eleven minutes gone in the round. Cole with a momentary lay and pray from half guard. Cole wants to control but Arias is keeping him busy. Arias trying to hold on to Cole's head to control him but Cole postures up.

Arias is not content to let Cole control the position. Cole might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Arias haven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.

Arias is desperately trying to improve his position but Cole has a good base and remains in mount. Cole trying to control but Arias is having none of it.

Arias bucks up and manages to get a nice reversal! He's in guard on the top - nicely done! Score +2 for sweep to guard / half guard: Arias (12) vs (7) Cole Cole looking to sweep here. No luck so far. Arias stays in close to Cole's body and controls the position. Arias wants to control from the top but Cole keeps moving. Cole working a defensive guard here.
That's fourteen minutes gone in the round. Cole wants to sweep but no luck. Cole keeping full guard, as Arias tries to pass. Arias stopping the sweep attempt from Cole. Arias stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Cole swivels though and keeps the full guard. Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out! Cole pulls Arias in close to prevent any damage.
And that's the end of the fight! Arias takes the fight on points by 12 to 7. An out of breath George Arias thanked his loyal fans in his post fight interview, giving them credit for his success over the course of his career. |
