This TWGC bout is 1 fifteen minute round in the featherweight division. Introducing today's competitors. And in the blue corner, fighting out of New York, with a TWGC record of 8 wins and 8 losses; Darian Cruz! The judges for this bout are Don Winkell, Timothy Bukovac and Jack Bonds.
Let's get this grappling contest under way! Who will be victorious? Brain tries to clinch and Cruz counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Cruz. Score +2 for takedown into guard / half guard: Brain (0) vs (2) Cruz Cruz looking to sit in guard and control but Brain gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top. Score +2 for sweep to guard / half guard: Brain (2) vs (2) Cruz Cruz pulls Brain in to control the position. Brain wants to control from the top but Cruz keeps moving. Cruz is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive. Brain trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Brain postures up.
Brain has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player. Cruz had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Brain defends it easily.
That's one minute gone in the round. Cruz keeping full guard, as Brain tries to pass. Brain wants to control from the top but Cruz keeps moving. Cruz not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Brain is fighting to break Cruz's control of his arms but Cruz is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment. We've been hearing that Brain has been drilling a lot of ground and pound in training, so let's see if he get the finish. Brain slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up. A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Cruz holds on and takes a little breather. Let's hope that Cruz has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Brain trying to control the position from guard on top but Cruz is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Brain stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Cruz swivels though and keeps the full guard. Cruz keeping moving, preventing Brain from controlling successfully. Brain is really struggling to control Cruz but he's trying to hold on to the position. Cruz is pulling down on Brain's head. It's preventing any offense from Brain, at least for the moment. Cruz is trying to control the position from the bottom.
That's five minutes gone in the round. Cruz is pulling down on Brain's head to control his posture.
That's six minutes gone in the round. Brain trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet. Brain stands and throws Cruz's legs to the side, diving into side control. Score +3 for passing guard: Brain (5) vs (2) Cruz Brain is looking to take a break and control but Cruz is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom. Brain looking to control but instead Cruz has slipped a leg in, to regain half guard. Cruz has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Brain is working away from the top position though. Brain trying to control the action but Cruz is working from the bottom.
That's seven minutes gone in the round. Brain is thwarting Cruz's attempts to control the position. Brain with a momentary lay and pray from half guard. Brain tries to pass to full mount but Cruz defends it. The fighters are tangled up in the ropes here. We might need a restart if the fighters can't break free themselves. Brain is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Cruz sees it coming and defends easily. Cruz gets back to full guard.
That's eight minutes gone in the round. Cruz is pulling down on Brain's head. It's preventing any offense from Brain, at least for the moment. Brain sitting in guard doing not very much at all here. Cruz doesn't need a second invitation though! He's locked up a guillotine and he's squeezing tight! That is tiiiiiiiiight! Brain paying the price for stalling here - he's pushing hard on the arm trying to free himself but it's no use! He's tapped! WOW, quick submission from Cruz - great work!
