PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Lenny Bruce (ranked 2387 p4p, 3136 weight class) and Zac Head (ranked 328 p4p, 418 weight class). Zac Head will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Lenny Bruce!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 1, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Zac Head!
The judges for this bout are Leandro Rodrigues, Paulo Santos and Mauricio Rocha.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Bruce misses with an uppercut. Head saw that one coming.
Head misses with a left hand
and Bruce counters with a series of strikes. Head will be more careful next time no doubt.

Head closes the distance and clinches.
Bruce fails to pull the fight into his guard.

Bruce pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.

Bruce fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Head sprawls well initially but Bruce persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
The referee calls for the fighters to work.
Head trying to control from the bottom.
Bruce prevents Head from improving his position.
Head is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.

That's one minute gone in the round.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Bruce controlling the action here.
Head is looking to improve his position.
Head tries to regain full guard. Instead though, Bruce has advanced to mount. Uh oh.
Bruce takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Bruce breaks from Head's wrist control and lands an elbow.
Bruce controlling the position easily from mount.
Head looking to escape from mount but he's given up his back!
Bruce doesn't have the hooks in and Head manages to turn into his guard.

Head stands and steps away. Bruce gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Head tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Bruce manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.

Bruce closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Head to the mat! Head manages to get full guard.
Head is wriggling around but Bruce manages to pass to half guard.

Bruce content to control rather than advance.
Bruce looks to score some points with some ground and pound.
Head tries to get to full guard but Bruce has control of the leg.

Bruce decides to stand and escape the position.

Bruce shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Head is trying to stand up here but Bruce is controlling him well.
Bruce is controlling the pace.

Bruce is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
Bruce is scoring with some nice ground and pound from the dominant position.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Lenny Bruce dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare each other down, ready to get back to the action.

Head tries to clinch

and Bruce counters with a takedown into side control! That could mean trouble for Head!

Bruce in side control lands a nice looking series of punches and elbows.

Head is rocked!
Head regains half guard.
Head is still in real trouble! Can Bruce finish him?
Bruce is taking a breather. Head says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.
Head seems to have recovered his senses.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Head manages to get to full guard.
Head is trying to control the position from the bottom.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Bruce trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Lenny Bruce overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Bruce stands up and waves to Head to follow him.
Head shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Bruce appeared to be looking to counter that last move with a leg kick.
Bruce stuffs the takedown attempt from Head. Head gets slowly back to his feet.
Bruce looks for a takedown but Head sprawls well.
Bruce fails with the takedown
and Head counters with a one-two to the body.
Lenny Bruce is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
A big right from Bruce misses.

Bruce looks for a takedown but Head sprawls well.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Lenny Bruce. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Head takes a step back and watches a body kick go sailing past his mid section.

Bruce shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Head napping and manages to drive through into side control!

Head throws Bruce to one side and escapes!
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Head slaps away a takedown attempt from Bruce, before circling back to the center of the mat.

Head rushes Bruce and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.
Bruce is looking for a takedown.

Head pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Head throws a sloppy head kick and Bruce moves out of range easily.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Head blocks a head kick by Bruce.
Head is clearly trying to counter these attacks from Bruce with a body shot.
Head misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Bruce.
It looked like Bruce was looking amped, ready to throw a big counter but didn't commit.
Head doesn't manage to clinch there - Bruce circles away.
Bruce attempts a counter takedown but Head avoids it well and moves away.

Head moves into the clinch.

Bruce has double underhooks and is working for a body lock takedown. He's got it. The fighters land in half guard but Head regains guard immediately.
Head is wriggling around but Bruce manages to pass to half guard.

Head makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Head.
Bruce lands a couple of elbows.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Bruce controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.

Bruce gets to his feet. Head looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!
Head stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Head wants it to stay on the feet.
Bruce fails with the takedown

and Head counters by clinching up.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Head has had enough of the clinch and is looking to separate.
Head jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Bruce walks away with a smile on his face. Head gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.
Bruce tries to close the distance and clinch but Head swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

A close second round but Zac Head will probably get the nod - 10:9.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. And we move into the final round!


Bruce drives through and clinches with Head against the cage.

Head's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.

Head forces Bruce back against the cage and clinches.

Bruce jumps into guard, dragging Head to the mat.
Head wants to control from the top but Bruce keeps moving.
Bruce working a defensive guard here.
Bruce doesn't do any damage with a couple of strikes from the bottom.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Bruce keeping moving, preventing Head from controlling successfully.
Bruce pulls Head in close to his closed guard and prevents Head from doing any damage or advancing position.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Head tries to stand but Bruce is controlling from the bottom.
Head must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.
Bruce is avoiding any damage by keeping wrist control.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up.
Head misses with a takedown attempt - Bruce sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Head shoots in but no luck this time.
Head misses with a double jab

and Bruce counters with a nice double leg into guard.

Bruce content to stall in guard here.
Bruce stands and throws Head's legs to the side, diving into side control.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Head is trying to buck Bruce off.

Bruce stands up and beckons Head to his feet.
Head tries to clinch up but Bruce circles away and keeps his distance.
Bruce misses with a takedown
and he gets countered with a snapping leg kick.

Bruce closes the distance and clinches.
Bruce drops down looking for an ankle pick but Head pulls his leg out and moves away.
Bruce shoots for a takedown but Head saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Lenny Bruce. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Bruce on the wrong end of a kick to the body.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Head is looking to clinch but Bruce is avoiding it.

Bruce bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Head is trying to get back to his feet.
Bruce cracks Head with a big right hand but Head just smiles back at him and invites him to have another go.
Bruce working away.
Head takes a big shot right to the temple there but he's taken it well.
Head tries to improve position but can't.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Bruce content to control the pace. The referee will try and keep them active though.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

And that's the end of the fight!
Lenny Bruce showed his dominance in that final round.
I think Bruce has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
