CACC 193: Steel vs Arias PBP Commentary |
This TWGC bout is 1 fifteen minute round in the lightweight division. Introducing today's competitors. In the red corner, competing out of Los Angeles, with a TWGC record of 11 wins and 10 losses; Bjj Steel! And in the blue corner, fighting out of Amsterdam, with a TWGC record of 33 wins and 18 losses; George Arias! The judges for this bout are Robert Twigg, Daniel Franklin and Cecil Peabody.
The fighters bow as they face eachother in the middle of the mat and we are under way. A momentary lapse in concentration from Steel enables Arias to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Steel manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat. Score +2 for takedown into guard / half guard: Steel (0) vs (2) Arias A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Steel holds on and takes a little breather. Arias tries to free his leg and advance position but Steel is retaining full guard. Steel is trying to control the position but Arias postures up. Arias forces his way into half guard. Arias trying to pass the guard but Steel defending well. Steel might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground. Arias prevents Steel from improving his position. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Steel keeping hold of Arias's head, controlling as best he can. The fighters are tangled up in the ropes here. We might need a restart if the fighters can't break free themselves. Arias is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.

Steel really is built like a bowling ball. I wonder if he'd roll if you pushed him down a hill... Arias avoids the attempt from Steel to control. Arias is trying to control the position but Steel postures up. Steel being controlled here momentarily. Arias working for a triangle but Steel defends it easily.

The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring. That's seven minutes gone in the round. Steel not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up. Arias is trying to control the position from the bottom.

Arias had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Steel defends it easily. Arias keeping moving, preventing Steel from controlling successfully. Arias is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive. Arias not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.

That's ten minutes gone in the round. Steel got a little sloppy there for a moment and Arias has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Steel has managed to get both his arms back between Arias's legs - danger averted. Steel trying to control but Arias is working from the bottom. Arias controls Steel momentarily but Steel frees himself.
That's eleven minutes gone in the round. Arias tries to land a sweep but no joy. Steel postures up.
Arias looking for a sweep. Not yet Arias, not yet. Arias escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Steel gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance. Arias controlling the position. Steel trying to control the position from guard on top but Arias is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Arias looking to sweep using the butterfly guard but Steel puts pay to that idea as he passes nicely into half guard. Steel wants to take a breather but Arias is having none of it.

That's thirteen minutes gone in the round. Arias regains half guard. Arias tries to roll over but Steel keeps him under control. Well, if Steel is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.

Arias wants to get back to full guard but Steel has passed into side control. Score +3 for passing guard: Steel (11) vs (5) Arias Arias tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Steel wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control. Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
And that's the end of the fight! Steel takes the fight on points by 11 to 5. Bjj Steel retains his lightweight title! A very excited looking Bjj Steel made sure he remembered to thank all the fans both in the arena and on the internet. He said all the coolest people spend all day on MMA websites, which got a big reaction. |
