PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Giuseppe Hopkins (ranked 15 p4p, 85 weight class) and Lenny Kowalski (ranked 3 p4p, 14 weight class). The atmosphere really building for this one as we go over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the light heavyweight championship of the world!
Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 20 - 3 - 1, fighting out of Helsinki, Giuseppe Hopkins!
And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 16 - 5 - 0, fighting out of New York, Lenny Kowalski!
The judges for this bout are Don Winkell, Jack Bonds and Percy O'Donnell.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
We've got one fighter who appears to only be looking to counter and the other not looking particularly aggressive either, so we could be in for a dull fight.
Kowalski ducks under a wild hook from Hopkins.
Kowalski slips a jab from Hopkins.
Hopkins is the aggressor but that punch slipped nicely by Kowalski.
Hopkins throws a front kick that sends Kowalski stumbling back into the cage.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Kowalski uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Hopkins.
Kowalski looks like he wants to counter punch here.
Hopkins is the aggressor but that punch slipped nicely by Kowalski.
A countering left hand to the body from Kowalski misses.
Hopkins has been talking about how he's improved his wrestling in the run up to the fight so let's see if that's enough to sway the balance.

Hopkins throws a hook to the side of Kowalski's head but Kowalski sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.

Kowalski throws out a counter right but Hopkins avoids it with no problem.
Both fighters are looking to counter, which isn't making for the most exciting fight in the world.
Hopkins throws a good cross that connects.

and Kowalski counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Kowalski.

Hopkins wants to improve his position but Kowalski is controlling well.

Kowalski seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Hopkins does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

Hopkins has his hands clasped together around Kowalski's back. He's all about the action.

Hopkins has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.

The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Kowalski has an active guard here but Hopkins has managed to pass into half guard.
Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Hopkins in particular looking to stall.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Giuseppe Hopkins will probably get the nod.
Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin!

Giuseppe Hopkins is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Hopkins tries to land a front kick but Kowalski steps back. That was a bit too telegraphed.
Kowalski now looks to counter with a shot at the body.

It seemed like Kowalski was going to counter with the hook but didn't fully commit to it.
Kowalski takes a shot to the eye socket. That's gotta hurt.

No joy there for Hopkins, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Kowalski appears to be waiting to throw a counter punch to the body.
Hopkins scores with a jab to the jaw.
Hopkins throws an off balance right hand
and Kowalski counters with a quick right hand to the jaw.
Hopkins loads up on a big right hand but Kowalski slips the punch.

The fighters circling - Hopkins throws out the jab but it was never going to land.
Kowalski only half commits to the counter leg kick.
Kowalski takes one on the chin but seems OK.

Hopkins cracks Kowalski with a big right hand that sends him to the floor! Kowalski looks wobbly but he's sprung back up to his feet straight away… can Hopkins finish him?

Kowalski is rocked!

It looks like Lenny Kowalski has been cut.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Hopkins finds Kowalski's off switch, with a big overhand right that connects perfectly to the side of the head! Kowalski flops back against the cage, eyes gazing into the distance. Hopkins lands an unnecessary shot before the referee has time to step in and end the fight. Brutal stuff but I'm sure Kowalski will be OK.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:42 of round 2, we have a winner by way of KO (Punch). Giuseppe Hopkins!

In his post fight interview, Giuseppe Hopkins started talking himself up. Luckily his charisma kept the crowd on side and gave him a good reception.
