PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Ruslan Karelin (ranked 1461 p4p, 2827 weight class) and Titan Reign (ranked 179 p4p, 336 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 9 - 6 - 0, fighting out of London, Ruslan Karelin!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 19 - 13 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Titan Reign!
The judges for this bout are Timothy Bukovac, Don Winkell and Percy O'Donnell.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Reign rushes in with a sloppy looking punch
and Karelin counters with a straight punch to the midsection.
Reign has been spending a lot of time sparring his boxing in the run up to the fight, trying to sharpen up those hands and look for a knockout.

Karelin darts in and clinches Reign up against the cage.
Karelin tries to land a knee to the head but misses.
Reign lands with a short shot to the head.
Karelin lands with a right to the head.
A head punch blocked on the inside by Karelin.
Karelin lands an uppercut.

Karelin pulls guard successfully.
Reign showing good wrestling skills to control the position.
Karelin has control of Reign's left arm, preventing Reign from doing any damage.
Karelin wants to sweep here but Reign controlling him for the moment.
Reign trying to control but Karelin is working from the bottom.

There's a bit of a scramble here and now Karelin is on top in guard.


Reign is looking for a triangle but Karelin pushes his legs off easily.
Karelin is working Reign over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes.
Karelin slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Karelin has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.

Reign has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Karelin can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Reign has his foot on Karelin's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Karelin works his way back into a safe position though.

Karelin is working Reign over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes.

Karelin got a little sloppy there for a moment and Reign has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Karelin has managed to get both his arms back between Reign's legs - danger averted.

The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Reign is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.
Karelin has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Reign is desperately trying to improve his position but Karelin has a good base and remains in mount.

Karelin has control of Reign's right arm, working for a kimura. It's a bit of a token attempt though and Reign regains control of the situation pretty easily.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.

Karelin smiles there as he lands a nice right hand right on the button.
Reign walks straight into a jab right on the nose. That one stung - he's blinking and trying to clear his head.
Reign throws a hard body shot but it just misses.

It looks like Ruslan Karelin has been cut.

Karelin gets in close and instigates a clinch.

Karelin is leaning against Reign and scores with a nice uppercut to the body.

Karelin digs a right hand into Reign's ribs. Those have got to be taking their toll on Reign's gas tank.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Karelin makes some space for himself and lands an uppercut.

Reign must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

Karelin looking for a triangle here. Reign is fighting it but it looks tight! Karelin pulls the arm across and this one won't last much longer! Nope, Reign is tapping out - this one is all over!

In his post fight interview, Ruslan Karelin started talking himself up. Luckily his charisma kept the crowd on side and gave him a good reception.
