Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Simon Gustafsson (ranked 680 p4p, 1011 weight class) and Jan Sobieski (ranked 104 p4p, 154 weight class). Sobieski comes into a darkened arena with his song building. Karnivool - Lifelike kicks in, the lights come on and the crowd goes wild! What a showman! Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of 18 - 13 - 0, fighting out of London, Simon Gustafsson! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of 18 - 10 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Jan Sobieski! The judges for this bout are Jack Bonds, Percy O'Donnell and Frank Antenori.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Gustafsson drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Gustafsson is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Sobieski knows the correct defense though, so he's OK. Gustafsson throwing strikes but missing, from side control. Gustafsson working the body and head with strikes. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Sobieski sneaks back into half guard. Gustafsson looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
That's one minute gone in the round. Sobieski has hold of Gustafsson's hands but Gustafsson slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow. Sobieski is looking to control Gustafsson's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Sobieski avoid being mounted? Gustafsson seems to be working for a kimura but Sobieski defends the submission attempt. Sobieski makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Sobieski. Gustafsson pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Sobieski is keeping the position for now. Gustafsson in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
That's two minutes gone in the round. My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer. Gustafsson stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Sobieski swivels though and keeps the full guard. Sobieski manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Gustafsson manages to get himself to full guard.
The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now. Gustafsson can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Sobieski controls the pace. Sobieski got a little sloppy there for a moment and Gustafsson has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Sobieski has managed to get both his arms back between Gustafsson's legs - danger averted. Gustafsson keeping moving, preventing Sobieski from controlling successfully. Sobieski is sitting in close to Gustafsson's body. Gustafsson has gone for a guillotine from the bottom. Oh damn, that looks pretty tight! Sobieski is panicking - it looks like this one could be all over! Yes, Sobieski is tapping! That was a very nice submission by Gustafsson.
