PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Brendan Wallace (ranked 3451 p4p, 5789 weight class) and Chad Davis (ranked 438 p4p, 561 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Brendan Wallace!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Chad Davis!
The judges for this bout are Jack Bonds, Timothy Bukovac and Frank Antenori.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Wallace has closed the distance and engaged Davis in a clinch.

Wallace is trying to trip Davis. He has hold of a leg but Davis is hopping around, keeping his balance for the moment. Wallace persists though and gets the takedown into guard.

Wallace's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.

Wallace gets to the clinch - let's see what his plan is here.

Wallace has Davis pressed up against the cage. He's trying to work for a single leg takedown. Wallace pulls back from the cage and twists to the side, sending Davis tumbling to the mat - Wallace dives into Davis's guard.

Wallace slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.
Wallace has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.

This is a sustained period of stalling by Wallace.
We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up.

Wallace clinches up against the cage.

Wallace is working on a single leg takedown against the cage. Davis can't fight it off and eventually Wallace manages to take the fight to the floor. Davis looks annoyed but at least he's managed to land in guard.

Wallace is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
Wallace controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
Further stalling from Wallace.
Our spies down at at Catch Wrestling L.A. inform us that Davis has really been working on his submissions in the buildup to this fight. Will it pay off?
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Wallace continues to stall.
Wallace continues to hold on tight.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Wallace rushes Davis and presses him up against the cage.

Wallace turns his hips and lands a very nice judo throw into side control!
Davis is looking to get back to his feet here but Wallace is keeping cool and he's managed to take Davis's back.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


Wallace has Davis up against the cage in a clinch.

Wallace pulls Davis into guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Wallace is pulling down on Davis's head. It's preventing any offense from Davis, at least for the moment.
Wallace will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Davis is breathing heavily.

The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.

Wallace clinches with his opponent.

Wallace gets double underhooks and manages to take the fight to the ground.
Wallace is stalling in the full guard.

Brendan Wallace overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
More hug and hope from Wallace.

Wallace is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.

Wallace pulls guard effortlessly.
Wallace is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Davis is trying to maintain the position but Wallace is very close to passing his half guard.
Wallace passes to full mount!

Wallace is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Davis can do to turn this around?
Wallace throwing sloppy strikes, which aren't doing any damage.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Davis wriggling around on the bottom manages to avoid the strikes thrown by Wallace.
Wallace cracks Davis with a nasty head shot there - the crowd let out an audible gasp there, as the noise reverberated around the arena.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. This is the final round!

Davis really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Wallace. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Davis takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Wallace stays in close to Davis's body and controls the position.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Davis can do anything to dispel that myth.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Wallace closes the distance and clinches.
Wallace keeps control of Davis as he tries to wriggle out of the double underhooks.

Wallace pulls Davis into guard.
Wallace manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Davis manages to get himself to full guard.

Wallace postures up in Davis's guard and throws a big left but Davis blocks it.
Wallace's corner is telling him to maintain position.

Wallace working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.

Wallace drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Wallace jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
Wallace slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.
Chad Davis has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.

Well Wallace has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
