PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Armad Bates (ranked 1790 p4p, 2643 weight class) and John Smith (ranked 277 p4p, 402 weight class). Smith has chosen Metronomy - Salted Caramel Ice Cream as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. John Smith has the better chin. Will he look to stand and bang today?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 7 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Armad Bates!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 6 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, John Smith!
The judges for this bout are John Roberts, Eddie Farnsworth and Alyssa Summers.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Smith throws a body punch but Bates moves out of range.
Bates uses decent footwork to sidestep a right hand from Smith.

Smith throws a shot from downtown. Bates moves away and avoids it.
Bates looks shocked there as he takes a right hand to the temple.
The fighters circle momentarily. Bates darts into range and connects with a nice straight punch.
Bates thows a leg kick but Smith checks it
and Smith counters with a nice uppercut.
Smith loads up on a big right hand but Bates slips the punch.
Smith looks to land a left hand but Bates moved out of range nicely.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Bates in particular looking to stall.

Smith pulls Bates in to control the position.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but John Smith will probably get the nod.

Smith throws a shot from downtown. Bates moves away and avoids it.

and Bates decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Smith's guard.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

and Bates makes him pay by landing a nice hook to the body before moving out of range.
Smith throws a jab but it's blocked by Bates.

and Bates counters with a nice double leg into guard.
Bates advances to half guard.
Bates passes to side control.
Smith trying to remain calm as Bates controls from the top position.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Smith is not content to let Bates control the position.

Bates thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. This is the final round!

Smith throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land.
A quick step to the side and Bates tries to counter with a shot to the body but it doesn't connect.
Smith might want to mix his strikes up a bit more. He's just going for head shots at the moment and that can become a bit predictable.

Smith feints a straight left to the body, then turns around with a flashy move and hits Batess jaw with a dramatic spinning back fist!

and Bates holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

John Smith seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

The fight stays on the outside here - Smith looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
