PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Grounded Stat (ranked 3960 p4p, 6616 weight class) and Jon Sterling (ranked 219 p4p, 313 weight class). Sterling has chosen ILovE as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. Grounded Stat has the edge in experience - let's see if he can make that count tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of London, Grounded Stat!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Jon Sterling !
The judges for this bout are Dean Styles, Franklyn Lucas and Russell Pearce.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Stat changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Sterling tries to avoid it but Stat manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Sterling to the ground. Sterling escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Sterling uses good footwork to get in and out, landing a nice hook.
Stat shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Sterling as he avoids it easily.
Stat closes the distance and clinches up with Sterling , looking for a takedown. Stat pushes Sterling against the cage but Sterling circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Grounded Stat. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Stat showing good head movement there, avoiding the strikes from Sterling .
Stat tries to clinch but Sterling is having none of it.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Sterling throws a right and a left that Stat avoids nicely.
Stat wants to clinch.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Sterling gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.

Sterling is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Stat defends well.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Stat wants to control from the top but Sterling keeps moving.
Stat is really struggling to control Sterling but he's trying to hold on to the position.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Stat is fighting to break Sterling 's control of his arms but Sterling is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.
Stat stays in close to Sterling 's body and controls the position.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.
Stat has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
Stat tries for a takedown but Sterling circles away easily
and Sterling cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Sterling throws a nice hook to the body that draws an oooh from the crowd.
Sterling connects with the punch.

Stat shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Sterling manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.
Sterling trying to keep a closed guard but Stat is proving a slippery customer.
Stat trying to control the position from guard on top but Sterling is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Sterling trying to strike from the bottom but really, it's not the best position to be doing that from!

Stat drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Sterling manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Stat has Sterling in his guard.


Stat had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Sterling defends it easily.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Sterling wants to pass the guard but Stat is keeping the position.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Stat is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
Sterling trying to control the position from guard on top but Stat is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Jon Sterling dominated that round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.

Jab, cross, leg kick. Nice combination by Sterling !
Sterling displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Stat.
Stat takes a shot to the nose. Hopefully that hasn't broken it.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Stat displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as Sterling throws out the jab.
Jon Sterling is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

Despite the aggression on Sterling 's face he doesn't fully commit to the counter.

Stat closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Sterling did well to prevent Stat getting side control.

Sterling is trying to maintain the position but Stat is very close to passing his half guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Stat is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Sterling sees it coming and defends easily.
Sterling gets back to full guard.

Sterling escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Stat gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

Stat trying to control but Sterling is working from the bottom.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Grounded Stat overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Stat wants to control from the top but Sterling keeps moving.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
Sterling throws a good cross that connects.

Stat closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Sterling to the mat! Sterling manages to get full guard.
Stat wants to control from the top but Sterling keeps moving.
Sterling tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Sterling keeping moving, preventing Stat from controlling successfully.
Sterling has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

Sterling has his foot on Stat's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Stat works his way back into a safe position though.

Stat won't allow Sterling to sweep him here.
Sterling is pulling down on Stat's head to control his posture.
Stat trying to control but Sterling is working from the bottom.
We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
Jon Sterling seems to be getting the better of the standup.
Sterling lands a lovely overhand right.

Sterling looks to land a combination but Stat avoids it well.
Stat drops down looking for a counter takedown but Sterling sprawls and moves away.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Jon Sterling showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. Let's get this one finished - here comes the final round!


Stat gets in close and instigates a clinch.

Sterling turns his back and goes for a hip toss. It's a bit messy but it gets the job done and Sterling manages to end up in side control.
Stat manages to land a sweep and he's now on top! Lovely Jiu Jitsu!
Stat wants to lay and pray for a moment but Sterling keeps working.

Stat is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
Sterling is not content to let Stat control the position.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Stat is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
Stat tries to pass the half guard into mount. Sterling knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.

Stat is working for a kimura but Sterling is defending it quite comfortably.
Stat wants to take a breather but Sterling is having none of it.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.

Stat wants to work for an arm triangle but Sterling is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
Sterling is concentrating on defense, preventing Stat from advancing position.

Stat is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Sterling sees it coming and defends easily.
Sterling strikes from the bottom but Stat passes into mount!
Sterling can't escape the position.
Sterling sneaks a leg under to get to half guard.
Stat is trying to control. Sterling wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.

Sterling is trying to get back to full guard.
Stat is taking a breather. Sterling says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.
Sterling is trying to maintain the position but Stat is very close to passing his half guard.

Stat seems to be looking for submissions.
Sterling is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

Sterling gets to the clinch - let's see what his plan is here.
Sterling fails to land with a short punch on the inside.

Stat gets double underhooks and manages to take the fight to the ground.
Sterling is trying to control the position but Stat postures up.
Stat trying to control the position from guard on top but Sterling is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Sterling pulls Stat in close to his closed guard and prevents Stat from doing any damage or advancing position.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

And that's the end of the fight!
Grounded Stat showed his dominance in that final round.
I think Sterling has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.

Jon Sterling spent the whole post fight interview bigging himself up. It didn't go down that well with the fans after a while as they thought it was a bit arrogant.
