PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Jay Cartwright (ranked 1887 p4p, 4113 weight class) and Rickson Time (ranked 109 p4p, 226 weight class). On his way into the cage it seems that Jay Cartwright has been attacked by a crazed fan! It looks like it might have been the just bleed guy! Luckily Jay Cartwright seems to be OK! I thought that lunatic was in prison!?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 9 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Jay Cartwright!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 8 - 9 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Rickson Time!
The judges for this bout are Colin Fray, Micheangelo Fripello and Paul Gruel.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Cartwright shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Cartwright showed some decent athleticism there.
Cartwright seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Time does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
We've been hearing good reports from Cartwright's training camp. Apparently he has been rolling around with some good quality BJJ practitioners and has been sharpening his skills. Let's see if that has an impact on the fight today.
Time gets back to full guard.
Cartwright tries to free his leg and advance position but Time is retaining full guard.

Cartwright is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Time is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Time has escaped and now he's on top!


Cartwright is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Time is aware though and is defending well.

Cartwright escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Time gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Time stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Cartwright swivels though and keeps the full guard.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Cartwright has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Time can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Cartwright escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Time gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

Cartwright manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Time manages to get himself to full guard.


Time has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Cartwright can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Time has his foot on Cartwright's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Cartwright works his way back into a safe position though.
Time keeping moving, preventing Cartwright from controlling successfully.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Time doesn't do any damage with a couple of strikes from the bottom.
Cartwright wants to control from the top but Time keeps moving.

Cartwright thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
Cartwright is pushing down on Time's leg trying to pass to half guard. Time is fighting to maintain full guard but Cartwright has managed to sneak the leg through.
Time is trying to get back to full guard.

Cartwright is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
Time wants to control but Cartwright is keeping busy.

Cartwright is trying to work for a kimura but Time is defending well.

Cartwright is looking for a kimura here.
Cartwright wants to take a breather but Time is having none of it.

Time is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Cartwright pulls his head out easily.

Cartwright is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.
Time wants to improve his position but Cartwright is controlling well.
Cartwright tries to pass the half guard into mount. Time knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.

Cartwright seems to be working for a kimura but Time defends the submission attempt.
Time tries to roll over but Cartwright keeps him under control.

Cartwright is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
Time moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Cartwright tries to free his leg and advance position but Time is retaining full guard.
Time is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Cartwright wants to control from the top but Time keeps moving.

Cartwright got a little sloppy there for a moment and Time has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Cartwright has managed to get both his arms back between Time's legs - danger averted.

Cartwright wants to lay and pray for a moment but Time keeps working.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Time gets back to half guard.

Time actively working from the bottom here.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Jay Cartwright dominated that round.
That's time! Cartwright's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.


Time darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.
Cartwright moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.
Time must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

Cartwright is actively looking for submissions from his back. He's worked himself a little space on the bottom and seems to be going for a triangle. No, he's switched into an armbar! That was slick! Time rolls with it to try and escape but Cartwright cranks on the arm and Time is forced to tap out! This one is aaaaaaaaall over!
