Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Dean Hawthrone (ranked 5345 p4p, 5340 weight class) and Jans Schmidt (ranked 436 p4p, 437 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Dean Hawthrone!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Jans Schmidt!
The judges for this bout are Yves DeLean, William Peck and Trevor Gratis.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Schmidt throws a series of punches but Hawthrone avoids them all with ease.
Hawthrone will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.

Schmidt moves into the clinch.
Schmidt lands a body punch - he's looking to wear down Hawthrone.
Schmidt misses with some punches.
Hawthrone is trying to work out of this bad position, with his back against the cage.
Schmidt lands with a quick shot inside that doesn't really do much damage.
Hawthrone tries to throw a body punch but Schmidt avoids it by throwing Hawthrone back against the cage.
Hawthrone wants to strike at distance but he can't break free of the clinch.
Schmidt lands with a short shot to the head.
Nice body punch from Schmidt - that landed with a thud.
Hawthrone jumps guard but Schmidt turns him against the cage and keeps the fight standing.
Schmidt scores with an uppercut up the middle.
Schmidt lands a nice uppercut.
A short body shot lands from Schmidt as the two fighters clinch.
Hawthrone blocking some punches.
Schmidt is struggling to control the position.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Hawthrone has Schmidt pressed up against the cage and is working for takedown. Schmidt manages to improve position though and keeps the fight standing.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Dean Hawthrone. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Schmidt presses Hawthrone against the cage and delivers a mid-strength body shot.
A body shot lands from Schmidt.
Hawthrone with an attempt at a knee that misses.
Hawthrone is trying to pull guard but Schmidt turns him against the cage and we stay in the clinch.

Hawthrone pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.

Hawthrone closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.
Hawthrone is keen to just control but Schmidt is a slippery customer.

Hawthrone seems to be working for a kimura but Schmidt defends the submission attempt.

Schmidt tries to get to full guard but Hawthrone has control of the leg.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Hawthrone seems to have lost interest with the ground game and is thinking about standing back up.
Schmidt really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Hawthrone. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Schmidt preventing any damage for now, controlling his opponent's head.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Schmidt closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Hawthrone did well to prevent Schmidt getting side control.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Schmidt looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Hawthrone with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.

Hawthrone is looking to escape.
The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Schmidt lands a nice short elbow.
Schmidt prevents Hawthrone from improving his position.

Hawthrone looking for submissions from an awkward position here.
Schmidt takes advantage of the dominant position to land a couple of big hammer fists.
Schmidt lands with a punch from half guard.
Schmidt prevents Hawthrone from improving his position.

Hawthrone looking to work for a kimura from the bottom.
Hawthrone is refusing to be controlled, as Schmidt sits in half guard.

Hawthrone trying to control but Schmidt postures up.
Schmidt looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Hawthrone with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.
Hawthrone is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Schmidt slips a nice elbow through Hawthrone's hands, connecting with Hawthrone's forehead.
Schmidt scoring with strikes to the body and head.
Schmidt looks to score some points with some ground and pound.

Hawthrone is rocked!
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Jans Schmidt dominated that round.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


Hawthrone rushes Schmidt and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.
Schmidt lands a nice uppercut.
Oh Hawthrone is still all over the place! His legs are completely gone! Will he be able to recover?!!
Schmidt lands a right hand.
A hook to the body from Schmidt.
Schmidt lands with a quick shot inside that doesn't really do much damage.
Schmidt lands a right uppercut that snaps the head of Hawthrone backwards.
Schmidt creates some distance for himself and unleashes a massive uppercut that sends Hawthrone's eyes rolling into the back of his head! Hawthrone drops to his knees and Schmidt pours it on with more strikes until the referee steps in to end the bout!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 0:22 of round 2, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Jans Schmidt!
A less than humble Jans Schmidt misjudged his post fight interview somewhat and came across a little too arrogant whilst trying to hype up his own abilities.
