CACC 202: Pavlov vs Archer II PBP Commentary |
This TWGC bout is 1 fifteen minute round in the lightweight division. Introducing today's competitors. In the red corner, competing out of Las Vegas, with a TWGC record of 7 wins and 4 losses; Bart Cubbedge ! And in the blue corner, fighting out of New York, with a TWGC record of 4 wins and 3 losses; Rico Cole! The judges for this bout are Percy O'Donnell, Jack Bonds and Don Winkell.
The fighters connect hands in the middle of the mat and we are under way. Cubbedge fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Cole sprawls well initially but Cubbedge persists and gets the takedown into half guard. Score +2 for takedown into guard / half guard: Cubbedge (2) vs (0) Cole Cole has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Cubbedge is working away from the top position though. Cole keeping hold of Cubbedge 's head, controlling as best he can. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
That's one minute gone in the round. Cole tries to roll over but Cubbedge keeps him under control. Cole keeping control of the leg, stopping his opponent passing to mount. Cole is continuing to stall.

Cole moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard. Cubbedge looking to sit in guard and control but Cole gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top. Score +2 for sweep to guard / half guard: Cubbedge (2) vs (2) Cole Cubbedge wants to sweep but no luck. The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Cole passes into half guard. Cubbedge is refusing to be controlled, as Cole sits in half guard. Cubbedge is concentrating on defense, preventing Cole from advancing position. Cole tries to pass the half guard into mount. Cubbedge knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt. The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult. Cubbedge trying to control but Cole postures up.
Cole is looking to take a break and control but Cubbedge is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom. The fighters are tangled up in the ropes here. We might need a restart if the fighters can't break free themselves.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Cole keeping composed on the top, looking to control the action. Cole prevents Cubbedge from improving his position. Cubbedge is not content to let Cole control the position. Cole takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.
That's five minutes gone in the round. Cole looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.

Cubbedge says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something. Cole is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
Cole is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there. Cole is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.

That's nine minutes gone in the round. Cubbedge is squirming around, avoiding Cole's attempts to control the action. Cole controlling the position easily from mount. Cole wants to control but Cubbedge has made it back to half guard. Nice work. Cole is just content to waste time from the top position. Cubbedge takes advantage of the situation and regains full guard.
That's ten minutes gone in the round. Cubbedge can't keep his opponent in guard - Cole advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount. Cole is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Cubbedge is just riding it out for now. Cole eventually gives up the hold. Cole not doing much here.
That's eleven minutes gone in the round. Cole is pressing down on Cubbedge 's thigh, looking to free his foot. Cubbedge is holding on for now. Cubbedge trying to control here.

That's twelve minutes gone in the round. Cole slows the pace down in half guard. Cubbedge won't allow Cole to pass to mount. Cole is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there. Cubbedge regains full guard. Nicely done. Cole looking to pass the guard.
That's thirteen minutes gone in the round. Cubbedge keeping moving, preventing Cole from controlling successfully. Cole is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position. Cole trying to control but Cubbedge is working from the bottom. Cole is in a good position here but he's just trying to control... And he's not even managing to do that successfully. Cole slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.
That's fourteen minutes gone in the round. Cubbedge trying to keep a closed guard but Cole is proving a slippery customer.
Cole not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up. Cole looking to sit in guard and control but Cubbedge gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top. Score +2 for sweep to guard / half guard: Cubbedge (4) vs (5) Cole Cubbedge trying to control the position from guard on top but Cole is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
And that's the end of the fight! Cole wins on points by 5 to 4. A very excited looking Rico Cole made sure he remembered to thank all the fans both in the arena and on the internet. He said all the coolest people spend all day on MMA websites, which got a big reaction. |
