CACC 202: Pavlov vs Archer II PBP Commentary |
This TWGC bout is 1 fifteen minute round in the featherweight division. Introducing today's competitors. In the red corner, competing out of London, with a TWGC record of 19 wins and 8 losses; Able Archer! And in the blue corner, fighting out of Las Vegas, with a TWGC record of 43 wins and 22 losses; Matvey Pavlov! The judges for this bout are Don Winkell, Frank Antenori and Timothy Bukovac.
The fighters bow as they face eachother in the middle of the mat and we are under way. Pavlov drives through with a takedown into guard. Score +2 for takedown into guard / half guard: Archer (0) vs (2) Pavlov Archer wants to sweep here but Pavlov controlling him for the moment. My spies in Marty Robbin's Fight Ranch inform me that Pavlov has been getting involved in the gym's BJJ sparring sessions. Let's see whether that pays dividends! Pavlov trying to control the position from guard on top but Archer is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Archer looking to control.
Pavlov sitting in guard, not really doing much. Archer trying to keep a closed guard but Pavlov is proving a slippery customer.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Pavlov trying to control but Archer is working from the bottom. Pavlov's corner is telling him to maintain position. Pavlov slips nicely into half guard.

The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring. Archer tries to get to full guard but Pavlov has control of the leg. Pavlov seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Archer does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back. Archer trying to control from the bottom.
Archer is trying to get back to full guard. Archer has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Pavlov is working away from the top position though. Pavlov seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Pavlov is pressing down on Archer's thigh, looking to free his foot. Archer is holding on for now. Archer trying to hold on to Pavlov's head to control him but Pavlov postures up.
Archer is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Pavlov's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Pavlov's back! Score +4 for clean sweep to past guard: Archer (4) vs (2) Pavlov Pavlov trying to control the action but Archer just sinks the hooks in. Pavlov is trying to break free.
Archer is looking for the choke from the back position but Pavlov is controlling his hands well. Pavlov tries to escape the position - he's now mounted. Is that better or worse? Hard to tell! Pavlov sneaks a leg under to get to half guard. The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult. Pavlov trying to control from the bottom.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Pavlov gets back to full guard.
Pavlov looking to hit a scissor sweep but Archer is one step ahead there. Pavlov pulls Archer in close to prevent any damage. Pavlov keeping moving, preventing Archer from controlling successfully. Pavlov has control of Archer's left arm, preventing Archer from doing any damage. Archer pushes down on Pavlov's leg and manages to get into half guard. Pavlov slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Pavlov tries to land a sweep but no joy. Archer pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Pavlov is keeping the position for now. Pavlov wants to control but Archer passes easily into half guard.
Archer wants to free his trapped foot but Pavlov is holding on for dear life with his legs. Pavlov is looking to improve his position.
Archer is thwarting Pavlov's attempts to control the position. Archer looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.
That's five minutes gone in the round. Pavlov is not content to let Archer control the position. Archer prevents Pavlov from improving his position. Pavlov trying to control from the bottom.
Pavlov tries to get to full guard but Archer has control of the leg. Archer looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Pavlov moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.
That's six minutes gone in the round. Archer won't allow Pavlov to sweep him here. Archer postures up.
Archer tries to free his leg and advance position but Pavlov is retaining full guard. Archer definitely looks more muscular than last time we saw him fight. Pavlov looking to hit a scissor sweep but Archer is one step ahead there. Pavlov is pulling down on Archer's head. It's preventing any offense from Archer, at least for the moment. Archer stopping the sweep attempt from Pavlov.
That's seven minutes gone in the round. Pavlov manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Archer manages to get himself to full guard.
Score +2 for sweep to guard / half guard: Archer (4) vs (4) Pavlov Pavlov is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions. Pavlov wants to control from the top but Archer keeps moving. Archer pushes a forearm under Pavlov's chin to create some space. He's escaped his hips and pivoted quickly for an armbar! Can he extend the arm? Yes, Pavlov is tapping out! Damn, that was fast!
