This TWGC bout is 1 fifteen minute round in the heavyweight division. Introducing today's competitors. In the red corner, competing out of St Petersburg, with a TWGC record of 0 wins and 0 losses; Joaquin Ortega! And in the blue corner, fighting out of New York, with a TWGC record of 0 wins and 0 losses; Wanderlei Rua! The judges for this bout are Matti Vanhoillinen, Anni Minnemäki and Johanna Lukiainen.
The fighters bow as they face eachother in the middle of the mat and we are under way. Rua looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily. Rua moves into the clinch. Rua successfully pulls guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Ortega won't allow Rua to sweep him here. Ortega thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position. Ortega stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Rua swivels though and keeps the full guard. Ortega is working hard here to advance position. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Ortega trying to control but Rua is working from the bottom.
That's one minute gone in the round. Rua is pulling down on Ortega's head to control his posture. Ortega stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Rua swivels though and keeps the full guard. Ortega drops back looking for a leg! Rua is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Rua manages to kick Ortega off! Ortega jumps back into Rua's guard. Ortega thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position. Rua is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage. Let's hope that Rua has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Ortega trying to control the position from guard on top but Rua is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Ortega sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Rua's guard. Ortega seems to be working for a kimura but Rua defends the submission attempt. Rua is looking for a sweep. Ortega is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position. Ortega is trying for a kimura here. Rua looks like he's in a lot of pain... and he's tapping out! Ortega wins by kimura!
