PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Rick Stellar (ranked 4847 p4p, 4990 weight class) and Mapple Syrup (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Rick Stellar!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Mapple Syrup!
The judges for this bout are Daniel Franklin, Sandra Marshall and David Hoff.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Stellar displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as Syrup throws out the jab.
Stellar tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
Stellar tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.

Syrup feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

The fighters are working up against the cage. Stellar manages to wriggle his way back to his feet, so the fighters are now clinched against the cage.
Syrup is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.

The pace slowing considerably in the clinch, as Stellar takes a break from that fighting nonsense to think about the finer things in life.
Stellar gets a warning from the ref for wasting time.
A battle for position here, against the cage.
Stellar lands with a light punch inside.

Syrup jumps into guard, dragging Stellar to the mat.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Stellar being controlled here momentarily.

Stellar is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
Stellar trying to control the position from guard on top but Syrup is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Stellar has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Syrup tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Syrup is looking to stand up but Stellar isn't so interested in that idea.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.

Stellar fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Syrup, pushing him back against the cage.
Stellar changes levels and goes for a takedown here. Syrup fights it off and pushes away nicely.

Syrup gets a double leg takedown into Stellar's guard.
Syrup controlling from the top position.
Stellar is trying to keep Syrup in close.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Syrup got a little sloppy there for a moment and Stellar has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Syrup has managed to get both his arms back between Stellar's legs - danger averted.
Stellar can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Syrup controls the pace.
Syrup trying to stand up but can't free himself from Stellar's guard.
Stellar throwing some rather feeble looking strikes off his back.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Syrup controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
The referee is pacing around the two fighters, thinking about a standup.
Stellar trying to keep a closed guard but Syrup is proving a slippery customer.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Stellar wants to clinch up but Syrup keeps it at a distance.

Syrup closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.
Syrup passes the guard and advances to mount!
Stellar is desperately trying to get back to half guard.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Syrup tries to control but Stellar wriggling away.
Stellar is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Mapple Syrup will probably get the nod.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!

Stellar lands a high kick!

It looks like Mapple Syrup has been cut.

Stellar tries to keep at a distance but Syrup has taken the fight into the clinch.
Stellar is trying to pull guard but being pressed up against the cage enables Syrup to keep the fight standing.

Syrup breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Stellar shoots in but no luck this time.
Stellar shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Syrup as he jumps to the side.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Rick Stellar. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Syrup closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Stellar to the mat! Stellar manages to get full guard.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Stellar tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Syrup stays in close to Stellar's body and controls the position.
Syrup postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Syrup working some strikes from top position.
Syrup working from the guard for now, landing some ground and pound.
Syrup not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
Syrup slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.
Syrup is pausing for a moment. What's he doing? It looks like he's clearing his nose. Oh dude! He's shot a load of snot all down Stellar's shoulder. That is not cool.
Stellar is trying to control Syrup's posture but Syrup avoids it.
Stellar is trying to escape the position but Syrup is controlling the position.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Syrup cracks Stellar with an elbow. That is naaassty.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Syrup content to control the pace. The referee will try and keep them active though.
Stellar is trying to improve his position.
Mapple Syrup has got the better of the ground game so far.
Stellar is not content to let Syrup control the position.
Stellar tries to improve position but can't.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Syrup tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Syrup has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!
Stellar is not in a great position here, taking some shots.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.

Syrup shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.

Syrup has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Stellar is proving hard to escape from.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Stellar is trying to keep Syrup in close.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Syrup advances position into side control!
Stellar tries to improve position but can't.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Mapple Syrup showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.

Stellar fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
Syrup is trying to avoid his opponent's strikes and get into the clinch.
Syrup has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Stellar shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Syrup sprawls well. Syrup wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Stellar gets slowly back to his feet.

Syrup seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Let's hope that Syrup has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.
Stellar is looking to get back to full guard here but Syrup has managed to pass to side control instead.
Syrup has knee on belly and moves into mount.
Stellar tries to hold on but Syrup pushes him away.
Syrup connects with a couple of good shots from mount.
Syrup tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd growing excited in anticipation of a finish here! Right on cue, Syrup cracks his opponent with a massive right hand that draws loud cheers!
Stellar wants to control but Syrup is having none of it.
Stellar really trying hard to get back to half guard here.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Syrup scoring with strikes but Stellar is staying in there.
Syrup avoids the attempt from Stellar to control.
Syrup prevents Stellar from getting the reversal.

Syrup takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
Syrup lands with some strikes.
Syrup content just to control the position here.
Stellar is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.
Syrup with a couple of short strikes.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Syrup controlling from mount.
Syrup lands an elbow that was bordering on illegal but the referee lets it go with a warning.
Syrup controlling his opponent.
Syrup unloading with bombs!
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Syrup tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.

And that's the end of the fight!
Mapple Syrup comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I've got Syrup winning every round here. Surely the decision will go his way and he'll pick up a well deserved decision victory. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
