PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a super heavyweight MMA rules bout between Roy Baker (ranked 7120 p4p, 5758 weight class) and Rudi Roberts (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). The key to victory for Roy Baker has got to be keeping the fight on the feet.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Roy Baker!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Rudi Roberts!
The judges for this bout are Paul Gruel, Jeff Smith and Roger Salmon.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Nice sprawl there from Baker as Roberts shoots in.
Baker shoots in for a takedown but Roberts shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.

and Baker counters with a lovely straight right hand!
Baker tries to clinch but fails miserably

and Roberts counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.

Baker kicks off Roberts and gets to his feet.
Roberts shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Baker as he avoids it easily.
Baker seem to be loading up, looking for a big counter.
Roy Baker has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Rudi Roberts.
Baker shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Roberts defends it nicely.
Roberts wants to counter the offense by Baker and move into the clinch position.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Baker connects with a good right hand that stumbles Roberts. Roberts circles away out of range and recomposes himself.

Baker wants to take advantage of his opponent's missed offense by moving into the clinch.

Baker tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Roberts paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Baker misses with a head kick.
Baker moves into range and throws a combination. A nice jab followed by a hook to the body.
Baker blocks a head kick by Roberts.
Baker fails with a takedown attempt.

and Roberts counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.

Baker manages to create a bit of space in order to work his way back to his feet. Roberts keeps hold of his opponent and drives him back against the cage.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Roberts manages to break the clinch.

Baker is looking to clinch.
Roberts misses with a head kick.
Horrible takedown attempt by Baker or perhaps it was just good defense by Roberts, which made it look bad.
Roberts stuffs the takedown.
Baker is breathing heavily.

Roberts closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.

Baker is trying to stand back up but Roberts is controlling him

Roberts's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
Baker shoots in but doesn't get the takedown

and Roberts holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.
Baker fails to pull the fight into his guard.
Baker stalling in the clinch but Roberts improves position.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
The referee calls for Roberts to work.
Roberts taking a breather.
Roberts continues to stall. The referee tells him to work or he's going to break them up.
Roberts missing with knees to the body.
Roberts looking for a takedown.
Roberts tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Baker just stands there and leans against the cage.

Roberts gets a trip takedown into half guard.

Baker actively working from the bottom here.

Roberts is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Roy Baker will probably get the nod.

Roberts has taken the fight to the clinch.

Roberts breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Baker's corner calls for a 1, 2 combination and Baker duly obliges.

Roberts fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Baker to the ground. Roberts is now in Baker's guard.

Baker uses the cage to get back to his feet.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Baker fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
Baker tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.

Baker tries to keep at a distance but Roberts has taken the fight into the clinch.
Baker tries to land a knee to the body but he is off balance and Roberts avoids it.

Baker has Roberts pressed up against the cage and is working for takedown. Roberts manages to improve position though and keeps the fight standing.

Roberts wants the takedown. Baker is fighting it off but Roberts persists and manages to bring the fight to the ground, ending up in Baker's guard against the cage.

Baker is scooting his butt against the cage and has managed to get back to his feet. Roberts presses him back against the cage, presumably looking to take the fight back to the mat.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Baker tries a knee to the head but Roberts blocks it.
Roberts controlling the action here for a moment.
Baker has had enough of the clinch but Roberts keeps him there for the moment.
Roberts with an attempt at a knee that misses.
Baker can't break the clinch.

Roberts jumps guard and drags Baker to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.

Roberts is looking to stand up but Baker isn't so interested in that idea.
Roberts is pulling down on Baker's head to control his posture.

Roberts throws his legs up looking for a submission but Baker uses it to pass to side control.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Roberts sneaks a leg under to get back to half guard.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Roberts is trying to control but can't.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Roberts wants to get back to full guard.
Baker is trying to control. Roberts wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.
Baker is taking a breather. Roberts says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.
Roberts works his way to full guard. Good work.
Baker wants to pass the guard but Roberts is keeping the position.

Roberts escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Baker gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Baker trying to control but Roberts is working from the bottom.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Baker checks a leg kick.
Baker attempts a counter takedown but Roberts avoids it well and moves away.
Baker tries to clinch up.
Roberts throws a lazy head kick
and Baker connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.
Baker fails with a takedown attempt.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Roy Baker. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Baker tries for a takedown but Roberts circles away easily

and Roberts counters with a nice double leg into side control. Baker won't be happy with that.

Roberts tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Roberts has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Roy Baker will probably get the nod.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. This is the final round!


Roberts shoots in and bounces Baker off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.
Roberts wants to get up but he can't break Baker's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.
Baker not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Baker looking for a guillotine here but Roberts defends easily.

Roberts slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Roberts wants to finish this one by submission but Baker is holding onto his waist, trying to prevent any attacks from Roberts.

Baker is squirming around, avoiding Roberts's attempts to control the action.
Roberts with shots to the head and body - Baker looks very uncomfortable down there.
Roberts content just to control the position here.
Roberts is looking to stand but Baker has his arms wrapped tightly around him, looking to prevent the damage.

Roy Baker is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Baker tries to improve his position but Roberts has taken his back! Roberts has a choke - it's sunk in pretty tight... Will Baker tap? No... maybe... yes! He's tapped! Roberts pushes Baker away and gets up to celebrate with his corner!
