PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Jim Jones Jr (ranked 370 p4p, 527 weight class) and Chad Smith (ranked 58 p4p, 82 weight class). Jones Jr comes to the cage accompanied by The Brian Jonestown Massacre - Ballad of Jim Jones. Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 19 - 12 - 0, fighting out of New York, Jim Jones Jr!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 18 - 11 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Chad Smith!
The judges for this bout are William Gold, Paul Tew and James Ackerman.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Jones Jr slips a jab from Smith.
Jones Jr scores with a jab to the jaw.
Smith keeping his hands up high there, blocking the jab from Jones Jr.
Smith tries to clinch but Jones Jr is having none of it.
Jones Jr keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.

Smith closes the distance and clinches.
Smith tries a body shot but Jones Jr blocks it.
I was talking to Jones Jr's coach per-fight and he was telling me that they'd been working on the clinch in the runup to this fight.

Jones Jr breaks the clinch.
Jones Jr clobbers Smith with an overhand right that has the crowd gasping. That made a horrendous noise.
Jones Jr cracks a nice hook into Smith's ribs.

Smith darts in and clinches Jones Jr up against the cage.
Smith lands with a short punch from the clinch.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Smith gets an overhook and lands an elbow to the side of the head.
Jones Jr pushes Smith back against the cage and lands a hook to the side of the head.

Jones Jr tries to circle away but Smith has him pinned against the cage.

The fight stays on the outside here - Smith looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Jones Jr slips a straight right by Smith.
Smith connects with a looping left hand that seems like it dazed Jones Jr momentarily.
Jones Jr throws an overhand right that lands on Smith's shoulder, as Smith tries to avoid the shot.
Jones Jr circles away from the clinch attempt.
The crowd cheers as Smith lands an impressive looking overhand right. Jones Jr doesn't seem phased though.
Smith throws out a loose jab but Jones Jr uses good head movement to avoid it.
Smith scores with a hook.

Smith rushes Jones Jr and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.
Smith told us before the fight that he's been working on his elbows. An under utilised technique these days - let's see if it can sway the outcome of the fight.
Jones Jr wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Smith has him pressed against the cage.
Jones Jr misses with some punches.

Jones Jr pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.

Smith drives through and clinches with Jones Jr against the cage.
With the fighters clinched against the cage, Smith creates a bit of distance for himself and scores with a nice uppercut.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Smith lands a nice shot to the body.
Smith tries a body shot but Jones Jr blocks it.
Smith tries to work over Jones Jr's body with a swooping hook but it only glances the target.

Jones Jr is trying to push Smith away but Smith has him pressed against the cage, so he's going nowhere.

Smith digs a right hand underneath Jones Jr's ribcage. Jones Jr let out a lung full of air as it connected.

Smith throws a hook to the side of Jones Jr's head but Jones Jr sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.

Smith swings for the body but Jones Jr moves out of range.

Smith lands with a nice body punch.
A slow jab from Jones Jr misses its intended target.
Smith tries to clinch up but Jones Jr circles away and keeps his distance.
Chad Smith is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Smith throws an overhand right that lands on Jones Jr's shoulder, as Jones Jr tries to avoid the shot.
Smith throws a shot from downtown. Jones Jr moves away and avoids it.

Jones Jr scores with a decent looking hook.

Smith moves into range and clinches up with Jones Jr.
Jones Jr lands a right uppercut that snaps the head of Smith backwards.

Jones Jr has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Smith avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.

Smith misses with a hook. Jones Jr ducked under it nicely.

Jones Jr passes the half guard and he's now in mount! Big trouble for Smith!

Jones Jr throws an elbow from mount that misses. Lucky escape for Smith because Jones Jr loaded up on that one.
Smith really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Jones Jr. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
The crowd applaud the fighters' efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Jones Jr lands a heavy elbow.
Jones Jr sends his fist crashing into the mat - the crowd let out a collective ooooooh. Let's hope he's not broken it!
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Jim Jones Jr will probably get the nod.
That's time! Jones Jr's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.

Smith cracks Jones Jr with a nice right hand that draws applause from the crowd.
Smith gets his head snapped back by a nice shot there.
Donk. Jones Jr catches Smith right on the button with a cross.

Smith rushes Jones Jr and presses him up against the cage.
Jones Jr tries to circle away but Smith has him pinned against the cage.
Smith throws a punch but it's blocked by Jones Jr.

Jones Jr breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Smith throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Jones Jr stuns Smith with a nice body shot, before stepping back out of range.
Smith fakes a head punch and goes low to the body. Nicely done.
Smith rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Jones Jr moves out of range and avoids them all easily.
Smith wants to clinch

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Smith tries to get to full guard but Jones Jr has control of the leg.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Jones Jr in particular looking to stall.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.

Check out the look on Jones Jr's face as he threw that strike - that's one determined fighter!
You can see the frustration on Smith's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
Jones Jr wants to lay and pray for a moment but Smith keeps working.

And that's the end of the fight!
Jim Jones Jr showed his dominance in that final round.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Jones Jr, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
