PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Taro Misaki (ranked 4805 p4p, 5057 weight class) and Zaka Cal (ranked 524 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Taro Misaki!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Zaka Cal!
The judges for this bout are Franklyn Lucas, Jorge Garcia and Chad Campbell.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Misaki closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Misaki lands in his opponent's guard.
Misaki trying to control the position from guard on top but Cal is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Cal can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Misaki controls the pace.
Misaki content to strike from guard, landing some decent shots.
Cal trying to keep a closed guard but Misaki is proving a slippery customer.
Misaki postures up in Cal's guard and throws a big left but Cal blocks it.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Misaki is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
Cal looking to control.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Misaki wants to control from the top but Cal keeps moving.
Cal really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Misaki. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Misaki makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard.

Misaki is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Cal is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Cal has escaped and now he's on top!


Misaki is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Cal defends well.
Cal must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

Misaki is adopting a defensive guard.
Misaki might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Misaki's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.
Cal is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.
If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Cal instigates a clinch.
Misaki prevents Cal from breaking the clinch.
Misaki goes for a takedown in the clinch but Cal prevents it.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Taro Misaki dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.

Misaki changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Cal looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.

Cal throws Misaki to one side and escapes!
Misaki dives in for a single leg takedown but Cal sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage.

Cal breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Cal ducks low and lands a nice hook to the body of his opponent.
Taro Misaki seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Misaki is defended easily by Cal.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Taro Misaki. That's going to take a lot out of him.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Misaki shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.

Cal is scooting his butt against the cage and has managed to get back to his feet. Misaki presses him back against the cage, presumably looking to take the fight back to the mat.

Cal breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Misaki is trying hard to land a takedown here. Cal sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.
Cal lets it all go there with a big combo counter but none of the punches connected.

Cal gets caught napping as Misaki dives in and scores a takedown. Cal manages to retain guard.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Misaki is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Cal wants to get up but he can't break Misaki's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.
Misaki seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now.
Cal is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.
Misaki continues to stall.

Cal is looking to work some ground and pound but Misaki has wrist control.
Cal looking to sit in guard and control but Misaki gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.


Misaki has gone for a leg lock! Cal slips out almost immediately though and dives into Misaki's guard.

Misaki pulls Cal in close to prevent any damage.

Misaki tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Misaki is adopting a defensive guard.
Cal wants to control from the top but Misaki keeps moving.
It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.
Misaki looking to hit a scissor sweep but Cal is one step ahead there.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Zaka Cal showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! This is the final round!

Misaki looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
Misaki sets himself, and Cal steps forward looking for the clinch! Misaki avoids it this time.

Misaki closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Cal quickly recovers to half guard.
Misaki throws a big elbow that misses, also allowing Cal to regain full guard.

Misaki drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Cal manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Misaki has Cal in his guard.

Cal won't allow Misaki to sweep him here.

Misaki is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.


Misaki is working for a kimura but Cal is defending it quite comfortably.

Misaki seems like he's working for an arm triangle here. He's freed his trapped foot and he's rotating nicely. Cal is in big trouble! He's tapping out! This one is aaaaaaaaaaaall over!
