Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Jan Nowak (ranked 4673 p4p, 5279 weight class) and Chris Laird (ranked 513 p4p, 534 weight class). Chris Laird has the better chin. Will he look to stand and bang today?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Jan Nowak! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Chris Laird! The judges for this bout are Vladimir Khabensky, Fedor Mirinova and Dmitry Maklakov.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Nowak scores with a body shot.
Laird doesn't manage to clinch there - Nowak circles away.
Nowak connects with a lovely right hand, straight down the pipe. Nowak closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Laird's guard. Nowak pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Laird is keeping the position for now. Nowak postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Laird is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Nowak, into his guard.

Laird passes the half guard and he's now in mount! Big trouble for Nowak! Laird wants to control the pace but Nowak is squirming around nicely.

Laird gets to his feet and calls his opponent to stand. Here come the fireworks! Laird closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage. Nowak drops down for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Nowak's corner are urging him to control the action in the clinch for a moment, rather than mount any serious offense. I'm sure the crowd appreciate those instructions... not. Nowak is trying to pull guard but being pressed up against the cage enables Laird to keep the fight standing. I was talking to Nowak's coach per-fight and he was telling me that they'd been working on the clinch in the runup to this fight.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Nowak has moved round to his opponent's back and is looking for a suplex! Oh snap! He's tossed Laird clear over his head and slammed him to the mat! Nowak not allowing Laird to control his hands. Nowak knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Laird on the ground. Nowak is working really hard to secure the rear naked choke. Laird defends successfully for a significant amount of time. Both fighters are looking very determined. The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily. Nowak is persistently looking for the submission but Laird is defending it well.
Laird defends a rear naked choke attempt by controlling one of Nowak's arms. Nowak goes for a risky armbar from back mount and it's not paid off. Laird escapes and is now in half guard on top. Nowak wants to get back to full guard. Nowak trying to control here.

Nowak looking to work for a kimura from the bottom. Laird moves into side control, avoiding a weak kimura attempt from Nowak. Laird is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Nowak is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now. The crowd thankful this round is nearly over. Laird wants to control but Nowak is keeping him busy. And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.
A close round but Chris Laird will probably get the nod. That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. Laird tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Nowak swivels and escapes. Nowak scores with a crisp jab that stopped Laird in his tracks. Laird fails with a takedown attempt. Nowak throws an overhand right that lands on Laird's shoulder, as Laird tries to avoid the shot. Laird gets caught flat footed, as Nowak shoots in with a quick takedown into guard. Laird bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Nowak's guard.
Nowak has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Laird can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself. Nowak keeping moving, preventing Laird from controlling successfully. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Nowak avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
That's one minute gone in the round. Nowak is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle. Laird stands up from guard. Let's bang! Nowak looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard. Nowak seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense. Nowak is trying to control. Laird wants to improve his position but can't escape this time. Nowak is trying to work for a kimura but Laird is defending well.
Nowak is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.

Nowak is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Laird is just riding it out for now. Nowak eventually gives up the hold. Nowak seems to be looking for submissions.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Laird is holding on to half guard well. Nowak is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
Nowak wants to control but Laird is keeping him busy. Laird is trying to maintain the position but Nowak is very close to passing his half guard. Laird is staying active underneath Nowak, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity. Laird gets caught napping as Nowak dives in and scores a takedown. Laird manages to retain guard.

Nowak is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control. Nowak drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Laird dives on top into guard. Laird throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Nowak works some decent striking defense from the bottom. Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out! Laird drops back looking for a leg! Nowak is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Nowak manages to kick Laird off! Laird jumps back into Nowak's guard. Laird trying to stand up but can't free himself from Nowak's guard. And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.
Jan Nowak dominated that second round. The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. This is the final round! Laird with a lazy takedown attempt and Nowak counters with a shoot takedown into half guard. Laird is defending against the submission attempts here by Nowak.

It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Laird defends it well. Nowak throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.
That's two minutes gone in the round. A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace. Laird tries to get to full guard but Nowak has control of the leg. Nowak is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
Nowak slows the pace down in half guard. The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace. Nowak is thwarting Laird's attempts to control the position.
The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. Laird shoots in for a double leg but Nowak sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy. Good shot there by Nowak. Nowak misses with an uppercut. Laird saw that one coming. Laird tries a counter takedown but it's more of a dummy move, and he uses it to push himself away.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Nowak cracks Laird with an open hand slap. A low kick from Laird misses and Nowak counters with a takedown into side control. Laird takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired. Laird regains half guard there - taking advantage of Nowak's attempt to lay and pray for a moment. Nowak is working for a kimura but Laird is defending it quite comfortably.

Laird makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Laird. Nowak is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Nowak drops back, looking for a kneebar! Laird looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Laird looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Laird! Nowak is looking to reverse the position. Nowak dodges the ground and pound from Laird. Nowak is trying to work for a sweep but Laird has mounted him! The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so! The crowd thankful this round is nearly over. Nowak really trying hard to get back to half guard here.
Nowak tries to lock up and control but Laird gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.
