PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Evan Duvernay (ranked 154 p4p, 803 weight class) and Damian Tonon (ranked 23 p4p, 104 weight class). Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 9 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Evan Duvernay!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 10 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Damian Tonon!
The judges for this bout are Jack Bonds, Timothy Bukovac and Percy O'Donnell.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Duvernay throws a series of punches but Tonon avoids them all with ease.
We can't be sure of the tactics at this early stage but we have heard that Tonon has been working on his takedowns a lot in the buildup to the fight and we can only assume he's going to look to take this to the mat.
Duvernay swings widly with a right hand

and Tonon counters with a nice double leg into guard.

Duvernay wriggles free and stands up.
Duvernay goes for a spinning back kick but it misses.
Tonon changes levels for a counter takedown but doesn't follow through with his attempt.

Tonon clinches up with Duvernay and pushes him back against the cage.

Tonon has picked Duvernay up - he's going for a ride! Tonon dumps his opponent to the mat with a thud and settles into half guard.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Tonon wants to lay and pray for a moment but Duvernay keeps working.

Tonon is looking for a kimura here.

Tonon seems to be working for a kimura but Duvernay defends the submission attempt.
Tonon stalling away here and it's allowed Duvernay to slip out his trapped foot and regain full guard.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Duvernay can't keep his opponent in guard - Tonon advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.
Tonon is pressing down on Duvernay's thigh, looking to free his foot. Duvernay is holding on for now.

Tonon is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.

Tonon looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.

Tonon seems to be working for a kimura but Duvernay defends the submission attempt.

Tonon is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Duvernay doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Tonon.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Duvernay has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Tonon is working away from the top position though.
Tonon looking to pass the half guard. Not this time.
Tonon is trying to advance to mount but he's lost his balance and Duvernay reverses the position - he's now on top in Tonon's guard.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Tonon isolates an arm and boxes in a triangle. Duvernay stacks Tonon on his neck as he steps over and passes to the side. He's now in a much more dominant position where he can look to do some serious damage. Nice move by Duvernay!
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Evan Duvernay will probably get the nod.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.

Tonon moves to clinch but Duvernay breaks away
enabling Duvernay to counter with a crisp jab.
Tonon tries to clinch but Duvernay is having none of it.
No luck for Tonon with that takedown attempt.
Tonon takes one on the chin but keeps coming.

It looks like Damian Tonon has been cut.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Tonon takes a big uppercut there. He seems a bit wobbly but no, he's OK.

The fight moves into the clinch position.
Duvernay misses with a punch to the body.

Nice body punch from Duvernay - that landed with a thud.
Duvernay creates a bit of space for himself and sneaks an elbow through Tonon's defenses.
Tonon is looking for a takedown.
Duvernay lands a short shot on the inside that snaps the head of Tonon backwards.
Tonon can't get the takedown.
Evan Duvernay has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Damian Tonon.

Duvernay breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Tonon takes a shot right to the liver - Bas would have been proud of that punch.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

and Duvernay counters with a nice jab to the body that keeps Tonon thinking.
Tonon steps to his left, right into the path of a big body kick from Duvernay. That one must have hurt.
Duvernay looks to score with a jab to the body but Tonon is just out of range.
Tonon drops down looking to force a counter takedown but Duvernay defends it well.

Duvernay lands a slapping body shot.
Tonon is looking to take this fight into the clinch.

Duvernay misses with a kick to the body

and Tonon counters with a shoot takedown. Duvernay fights it but they end up in guard.
Tonon wants to pass the guard but Duvernay is keeping the position.
Duvernay is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Tonon can do to turn this around?

Tonon tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Tonon has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Tonon tries to cartwheel into mount but he doesn't manage it.

Tonon goes for an armbar here - this could be all over! But no, Duvernay has escaped beautifully and is now on top in side control! Oh, that's unlucky for Tonon but great work by Duvernay.
Duvernay is pausing for a moment. What's he doing? It looks like he's clearing his nose. Oh dude! He's shot a load of snot all down Tonon's shoulder. That is not cool.

Tonon sneaks a leg back under and regains half guard and is working straight away to try and get back to guard. He hasn't managed just yet though.
Duvernay is thwarting Tonon's attempts to control the position.
Well, if Duvernay is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.
Tonon wants to control the action here but instead Duvernay manages to pass to full mount!

Tonon flailing away with punches but nothing is landing.

Tonon bucks up and manages to get a nice reversal! He's in guard on the top - nicely done!
Duvernay utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Duvernay is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Evan Duvernay showed his dominance in that final round.
Well Duvernay has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
