PBP Commentary |
Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Patrick Slinger (ranked 3495 p4p, 5670 weight class) and Israel Kirzner (ranked 329 p4p, 441 weight class). Slinger comes into the arena with Hail Mary blaring out of the sound system. The atmosphere really building for this one as we go over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of 4 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Patrick Slinger! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of 2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Israel Kirzner! The judges for this bout are George Francis, Wesley Smith and Cecil Peabody.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Slinger gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily enabling Kirzner to counter with a crisp jab. Kirzner misses with a hook. Slinger ducked under it nicely. Slinger misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Slinger looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily. Kirzner tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Slinger was well out of range. Poor timing from Kirzner. Nice shot by Kirzner. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Slinger bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control. Slinger is looking to take a break and control but Kirzner is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom. We've been hearing that Slinger has been drilling a lot of ground and pound in training, so let's see if he get the finish. Slinger working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.
That's one minute gone in the round. Slinger trying to control the action but Kirzner is working from the bottom. The referee asks Slinger politely if he wouldn't mind getting on with it and actually doing something. Slinger prefers to stall for the moment though. Slinger wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Kirzner, who protects the arm well. Kirzner looks more muscular than last time we saw him. He must have been on the weights. The ground and pound from Slinger seems to be hitting the mat more than his opponent. Slinger is putting a hurting on Kirzner here, landing some big shots from side control. We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Kirzner can do anything to dispel that myth.
That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so. Slinger is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Kirzner knows the correct defense though, so he's OK. Slinger works to advance to full mount. Kirzner defends for a few seconds but eventually he succumbs. Slinger tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position. Slinger misses with a head shot. Slinger controlling the position easily from mount. Slinger looking for a guillotine from mount but Kirzner is having none of it.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Slinger controlling the position easily from mount. Slinger looking to ground and pound but Kirzner is blocking nicely. Slinger has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission. Kirzner holding onto his opponent's waist for dear life, as Slinger tries to land some strikes to get him to release his grip.

That's four minutes gone in the round. Kirzner blocking the ground and pound. Slinger controlling from the full mount. Slinger throwing shots from mount but they're not landing. The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily. Kirzner avoids a series of strikes thrown by Slinger.
Slinger with some aggressive grappling here. He's looking for submissions here, rather than waiting for the opportunity to counter.
Kirzner really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Slinger. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out. Kirzner blocking the ground and pound. Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. The crowd thankful this round is nearly over. Slinger wants to control the pace but Kirzner is squirming around nicely. And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.
Patrick Slinger dominated that round. That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. Slinger shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Kirzner sprawls well. Kirzner wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Slinger gets slowly back to his feet. No luck for Slinger with that takedown attempt. Kirzner throws out a counter right but Slinger avoids it with no problem. Kirzner stuffs the takedown attempt from Slinger. Slinger gets slowly back to his feet. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Patrick Slinger. That's going to take a lot out of him. Kirzner fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Slinger manages to avoid it. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Slinger pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Slinger shoots for a double leg takedown but Kirzner sprawls well. He's pushed Slinger's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily. A little jabbing left from Kirzner on the counter but it doesn't find it's target. Slinger shoots in for a double leg but Kirzner sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy. Slinger misses with a takedown attempt and Kirzner counters with a nice uppercut.
That's one minute gone in the round. Kirzner scores with a jab to the jaw of his opponent. Kirzner cracks Slinger with a right hand to the side of the head. Slinger misses with a hook to the body
and Kirzner counters with a quick right hand to the jaw. Kirzner throws out a token jab with nothing on it. Slinger fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt. Kirzner now looks to counter with a shot at the body. Slinger is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Kirzner can do to turn this around? Slinger feints and as Kirzner raises his hands in defense, Slinger changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard. Slinger is looking to work some ground and pound but Kirzner has wrist control. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Slinger missing there with some ground and pound from the guard. Kirzner is trying to control the position but Slinger postures up.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Slinger trying to control the position from guard on top but Kirzner is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Slinger is working Kirzner over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes. Slinger is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there. A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Slinger accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand. Kirzner wants to sweep here but Slinger controlling him for the moment. Slinger in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time. Slinger distracts Kirzner with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm. Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Kirzner utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Slinger not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up. Slinger working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage. Slinger throws a big right hand that misses. Slinger thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position. Slinger stopping the sweep attempt from Kirzner. It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup. Slinger wants to control from the top but Kirzner keeps moving.
The referee decides to stand the fighters back up. Slinger walks straight into an uppercut. Luckily it didn't land flush. Israel Kirzner seems to be getting the better of the standup. Slinger shoots in but Kirzner avoids the takedown attempt easily.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Slinger looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily. Slinger circles away out of range and recomposes himself. Slinger shoots in for a double leg but Kirzner sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy. Kirzner throws out a counter right but Slinger avoids it with no problem. And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.
Israel Kirzner showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards. OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. This is the final round! Slinger tries to score with a leg kick but it misses it's target. Kirzner defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Slinger. Israel Kirzner is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things. Slinger lands with a kick to the temple. Kirzner shrugs as if to say "is that all you've got?" Slinger throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Kirzner tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Slinger is in Kirzner's guard. Slinger postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head. Slinger trying to control but Kirzner is working from the bottom. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Slinger is looking to work some ground and pound but Kirzner has wrist control. Slinger keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of Kirzner's head. Slinger works over Kirzner with some ground and pound from guard.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Slinger throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent. Slinger trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat. Kirzner being controlled here, momentarily. Slinger trying to control the position from guard on top but Kirzner is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless. The referee is pacing around the two fighters, thinking about a standup.
The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity. Kirzner throws a nice looking combination but Slinger bobs and weaves to avoid any damage. Kirzner misses with an uppercut. Kirzner thows a leg kick but Slinger checks it and Slinger counters with a shoot takedown. Kirzner fights it but they end up in guard. Slinger throws a big right hand that misses. Slinger is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions. Slinger throwing strikes from guard but Kirzner blocks nicely. Slinger thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position. Kirzner has control of Slinger's left arm, preventing Slinger from doing any damage. Slinger stays in close to Kirzner's body and controls the position.

That's four minutes gone in the round. Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless. Slinger shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Kirzner is trying to defend but Slinger finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further. Slinger seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Kirzner does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back. Slinger lands with a punch from half guard. Slinger throwing shots but Kirzner is blocking nicely. Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out! Slinger is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen. Slinger wants to work for an arm triangle but Kirzner is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
And that's the end of the fight! Patrick Slinger showed his dominance in that final round. I think Slinger has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
