PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Connar Mackay (ranked 4795 p4p, 5433 weight class) and Jesse James (ranked 415 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Connar Mackay!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Jesse James!
The judges for this bout are Paulsen Ambrosius, Saam Ante and Albert Achterberg.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Mackay shoots for a takedown but James saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Mackay shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as James sprawls well. James wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Mackay gets slowly back to his feet.
Mackay misses with the body kick

and James counters into the clinch. Nicely done.
James misses with a short punch on the inside.
Mackay has James pressed up against the cage and is working for takedown. James manages to improve position though and keeps the fight standing.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Connar Mackay. That's going to take a lot out of him.
James goes for a takedown attempt but Mackay pushes him away and we're back to fighting at a distance.
A combination from James does no damage.
Mackay changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. James tries to avoid it but Mackay manages to keep hold of a leg and drag James to the ground. James escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
James fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Mackay avoids it really well and circles away.

James clinches up with Mackay and pushes him back against the cage.

James breaks the clinch.

James shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Mackay manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.

Mackay uses the cage to get back to his feet.
Mackay tries to clinch but James is having none of it.

Mackay has his feet on James's hips. He pushes off and gets to his feet. Nice work.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Mackay wants to break the clinch but can't.

James has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Mackay uses from the top position.
James wants to sweep here but Mackay controlling him for the moment.
James wants to stand up but Mackay is controlling him.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Mackay decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.
James shoots in but no luck this time.

Mackay moves in looking to clinch but James pushes him off.
As Mackay backs off James throws a huge counter combo but Mackay manages to avoid it all.

James closes the distance and clinches.
James tries to score a body lock takedown but Mackay shows good agility there to stay on his feet.

Mackay jumps into guard, dragging James to the mat.
James in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
James trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Mackay manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. James manages to get himself to full guard.

James really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Mackay. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
James is pulling down on Mackay's head to control his posture.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Mackay won't allow James to sweep him here.

James is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Mackay is controlling him.

Mackay thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
Mackay is breathing heavily.

James is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
Mackay stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. James swivels though and keeps the full guard.

James is working an open guard so Mackay takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.
Mackay tries a head kick but it misses.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Jesse James will probably get the nod.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.

James misses with the combination.
Mackay will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.

Despite the aggression on James's face he doesn't fully commit to the counter.

James manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Mackay on his heels. He'll look to pass Mackay's guard now, I'm sure.

James wants to control from the top but Mackay keeps moving.
Mackay is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
James must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

Mackay is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because James is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.

Mackay dives in and grabs James's left leg, looking for a takedown. James pushes down on Mackay's head and hops out.

Horrible takedown attempt by James or perhaps it was just good defense by Mackay, which made it look bad.

Mackay drops to a knee looking for a takedown but James gets the underhooks and prevents it.
James jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Mackay walks away with a smile on his face. James gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.

Mackay walks forward and throws out a flicking leg kick. James checks it nicely though, as he moves to the side.
James is looking for the big counter here.
James throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Mackay will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.

James gets underhooks to prevent Mackay's takedown attempt.

James pulls guard successfully.
Connar Mackay overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Mackay stands and steps away. James gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.

Jesse James showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

James has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Mackay avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.
