PBP Commentary |
Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between City Boy (ranked 4890 p4p, 23783 weight class) and Deshawn Shaw (ranked 62 p4p, 0 weight class). Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, City Boy! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of 2 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Deshawn Shaw! The judges for this bout are Colin Fray, Ryoma Takatsuka and Micheangelo Fripello.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Boy fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Shaw, pushing him back against the cage. Shaw tightens his grip and picks Boy up, before dumping him to the ground. Boy manages to land in guard. Boy throwing some rather feeble looking strikes off his back.
Shaw stands and steps away. Boy gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game. Boy shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in side control! That's better than Boy was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure! Boy tries to stand but Shaw is controlling his head. Boy thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead. A lull in the action here as Boy stalls from top position. Boy tries to get to his feet but he's trapped momentarily. Shaw really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Boy. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
That's one minute gone in the round. Boy working the ground and pound. Shaw told us pre-fight that he has been working on his escapes in training. Let's see if he can call on some of his new skills to get back to his feet. Boy wants to stand but Shaw has his arm trapped. Shaw looks to move to half guard but instead Boy has passed into mount! Damn! Boy will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions. Boy lands a shot to the body, followed up by a shot to the exposed head of his trapped opponent.
Shaw defends a decent attempt at a guillotine from Boy. Shaw tries to lock up and control but Boy gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Boy content just to control the position here. Boy is in the full mount, landing strikes. Boy lands with some vicious ground and pound - can Shaw hang on? Boy sitting in mount, just looking to control for the moment.
That's three minutes gone in the round. The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult. Shaw throwing punches from his back but nothing is landing. Boy with the ground and pound from mount. Boy goes for an armbar but he's not got it… Shaw turns into him and now he's in Boy's guard.
Shaw throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Boy is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage. Boy working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Shaw doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Shaw manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem. Boy is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent. Boy pulls Shaw in close to his closed guard and prevents Shaw from doing any damage or advancing position. The crowd thankful this round is nearly over. Boy has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent. And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.
City Boy dominated that round. That's time! Boy's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. Shaw is looking to land body kicks. Boy pushes Shaw up against the cage in a clinch. Boy decides to pull guard. Shaw won't allow Boy to get back to his feet. Boy is controlling Shaw's posture. Boy is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Shaw can do to turn this around? Shaw wants to control from the top but Boy keeps moving. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Boy pulls Shaw in close to prevent any damage.
That's one minute gone in the round. Boy is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Shaw defends well. Shaw must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu. Boy wants to get back to his feet but Shaw is in a dominant position and won't allow it. Boy has control of Shaw's left arm, preventing Shaw from doing any damage. Shaw trying to control the position from guard on top but Boy is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
That's two minutes gone in the round. A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace. Boy wants to stand up but Shaw is controlling him. Shaw trying to control but Boy is working from the bottom.
The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. Shaw shoots in for a double leg but Boy sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy. Boy moves out of range of the body kick from Shaw.
Boy throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Shaw was covering up waiting for the punch and Boy finishes the takedown easily into guard. Boy makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard. Boy is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Shaw wants to stand but Boy is controlling the position. Shaw working a defensive guard but Boy manages to pass into side control anyway.
Shaw is breathing heavily. Boy in side control, just content to control the action for now.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless. Shaw is trying to control Boy's posture but Boy avoids it. Check out the look on Boy's face as he threw that strike - that's one determined fighter!
Boy cracks Shaw with an elbow. That is naaassty. Boy advances to full mount. Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out! Shaw keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.
Boy scores with a couple of good head shots there.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.
City Boy dominated that second round. The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. Ladies and gentlemen, this is the final round!
Excellent takedown into side control there by Boy. Boy has knee on belly and moves into mount. Boy is landing with some decent strikes but Shaw is trying to advance his position so the referee is letting the fight continue. Boy prevents Shaw from getting the reversal. Boy controlling from mount. This is a sustained period of stalling by Boy. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Boy landing strikes, looking to finish!
That's one minute gone in the round. Boy with the ground and pound from mount. Boy controlling from the full mount. Boy avoids the attempt from Shaw to control. Shaw takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired. Boy throws some shoulder strikes here and then postures up. Oh, he's gone for an armbar! Shaw has his hands clasped together but Boy breaks the hold and Shaw is forced to tap! This one is aaaaaaaaaaall over! That was lightning fast by Boy!
