CWC 230 PBP Commentary |
This TWGC bout is 1 fifteen minute round in the featherweight division. Introducing today's competitors. In the red corner, competing out of London, with a TWGC record of 20 wins and 9 losses; Able Archer! And in the blue corner, fighting out of Los Angeles, with a TWGC record of 6 wins and 3 losses; Reijo Halli! The judges for this bout are Stewart Dunkirk, Daniel Franklin and Cecil Peabody.
The fighters connect hands in the middle of the mat and we are under way. Halli shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Score +2 for takedown into guard / half guard: Archer (0) vs (2) Halli Archer wants to control but Halli is keeping busy and won't allow it. Halli wants to lay and pray for a moment but Archer keeps working. Archer trying to control but Halli postures up.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Halli not doing much here.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Archer is in a bad position, trying to hold on for dear life but he is really struggling to maintain any sort of control.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Halli is figuring out what he wants to do next. Halli wants to work for an arm triangle but Archer is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
Archer desperately trying to maintain half guard. Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Halli in particular looking to stall.

Archer has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Halli is working away from the top position though. Archer has his hands clasped together around Halli's back. He's all about the action. Archer definitely looks more muscular than last time we saw him fight.

Archer gets back to full guard.
Halli trying to control the position from guard on top but Archer is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Archer has Halli pulled in close to control his posture.
That's five minutes gone in the round. Halli stays in close to Archer's body and controls the position. Archer wants to hit a sweep here but Halli passes into full mount! Oh no, disaster for Archer there! Score +3 for passing guard: Archer (0) vs (5) Halli Archer is trying to reverse the position but instead Halli has taken his back - oops! Score +3 for taking back: Archer (0) vs (8) Halli Archer preventing the rear naked choke attempt from Halli. Archer looks to control his opponent's hands but he's not mananging it at the moment. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
That's six minutes gone in the round. Archer tries to roll but Halli sticks to his back.
Halli wants to control but Archer is keeping busy. Halli is hanging on to Archer's back as he tries to escape.
Archer looks to control his opponent's hands but he's not mananging it at the moment.
That's seven minutes gone in the round. Archer is trying to break free.
Archer tries to escape the position - he's now mounted. Is that better or worse? Hard to tell! Halli is trying to take his opponent's back.
Halli is still trying to improve position. Archer is wriggling around trying to escape.
That's eight minutes gone in the round. Halli avoids the attempt from Archer to control. Halli wants to control the pace but Archer is squirming around nicely. Halli tries to take Archer's back but instead Archer uses the opportunity to regain half guard. Archer is trying to get back to full guard.
That's nine minutes gone in the round. Halli is looking to pass the guard... He's managed it - he's now in full mount! Score +3 for passing guard: Archer (0) vs (11) Halli Archer wants to hold on but Halli pushes him away. Archer is squirming around, avoiding Halli's attempts to control the action. Archer sneaks a leg back under and regains half guard and is working straight away to try and get back to guard. He hasn't managed just yet though. Archer trying to hold on to Halli's head to control him but Halli postures up.
Archer moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.
That's ten minutes gone in the round. Archer keeping full guard, as Halli tries to pass. Archer controls Halli momentarily but Halli frees himself. Archer is really struggling to control Halli but he's trying to hold on to the position. Halli avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
That's eleven minutes gone in the round. Archer looks to be working for a triangle here. Oh, it looks like he might have it! Halli has picked Archer up and slammed him! Archer can't keep hold of the triangle and Halli manages to pass to side control! Score +3 for passing guard: Archer (0) vs (14) Halli Archer tries to control the position but he's not in luck - Halli easily slips into full mount! Score +2 for reaching mount: Archer (0) vs (16) Halli Archer is trying desperately to improve position. Archer tries to hold on but Halli pushes him away. Archer is working to get back to half guard.
That's twelve minutes gone in the round. Halli is working for a guillotine from mount but Archer frees his head quite easily.

Halli tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position. Halli goes for an armbar but he's fallen flat on his backside there and now Archer is on top in guard.

That's thirteen minutes gone in the round. Archer stays in close to Halli's body and controls the position. Halli is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive. Archer trying to control but Halli is working from the bottom. Halli looking to control.
Archer controls the pace of the fight for a moment.

Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out! Halli keeping full guard, as Archer tries to pass.
And that's the end of the fight! Halli wins on points by 16 to 2. Reijo Halli is the new featherweight champion! Reijo Halli decided to go for the less than humble approach in his post fight interview, telling everyone how he is going to conquer the world. The crowd seemed to like it when really that sort of approach could have gone either way. |
