The fighters bow as they face eachother in the middle of the mat and we are under way. Nice takedown defense from Menday. No joy for Couceiro on that attempt. Excellent takedown into side control there by Couceiro. He isn't landing a great percentage of his ground strikes so far though. Menday tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Couceiro wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control. Menday is working hard here to advance position. Couceiro might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Menday haven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time. Menday manages to get back to half guard. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Couceiro looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding. Couceiro's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige. Menday is not content to let Couceiro control the position.

It looks like Couceiro might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it. Menday wants to get back to full guard.
That's thirteen minutes gone in the round. Couceiro content to control rather than advance. Let's hope that Couceiro has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.
