Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between John Bessant (ranked 1592 p4p, 1070 weight class) and Jolly Roger (ranked 221 p4p, 154 weight class). Roger has chosen Under Jolly Roger as his entrance music. Fingers crossed for an exciting fight - I'm sure both fighters are looking for a nice under the table bonus!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 16 - 11 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, John Bessant!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 11 - 10 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Jolly Roger!
The judges for this bout are Chad Campbell, Steve Montenegro and Franklyn Lucas.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Roger throws a good cross that connects.
Roger swings for the body but Bessant moves out of range.
Roger comes forward and lands a shot to the body, then darts back out of range.
Bessant throws a hook but Roger avoids it easily.
Roger misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Bessant.
Bessant seem to be loading up, looking for a big counter.
Roger connects with a jab.
Jolly Roger seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Bessant throws a hook but Roger blocks it.
Roger tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Bessant was well out of range. Poor timing from Roger.
Roger connects with a body shot that sends Bessant's belly button to the back.
Roger looks to score with a jab to the body but Bessant is just out of range.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Bessant has his hands up protecting his head but a hook from Roger finds it's way round the side to connect with Bessant's head.
Roger fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Bessant manages to avoid it.
Roger jabs Bessant right on the nose. Bessant blinks but takes it well.
Roger is throwing a lot of body shots here, looking to wear down Bessant rather than just go for the knockout.
Roger slips in close and lands a nice hook before moving back out of range.

Roger shoots for a double leg takedown but Bessant sprawls well. He's pushed Roger's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Roger misses with a straight left.
Bessant appears to be looking for a counter punch to the body.
Roger ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Bessant moves away.
Roger throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
It looked like Bessant wanted to counter with a hook but didn't fully commit.
We've been told by Bessant's head coaches at Soul Supremacy Rio that he's been working on his takedown defense in preparation for this fight.
Roger looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
A little feinted left hand from Bessant on the counter but he doesn't commit to it.
Roger connects with a hook to the side of his opponent's head.
Roger tries to clinch up.
Roger rushes in with a sloppy looking punch
and Bessant counters with a two punch combo.

Roger throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Bessant was covering up waiting for the punch and Roger finishes the takedown easily into guard.
Roger stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Bessant swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Roger postures up and lands a big shot to Bessant's brow.

Roger pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Bessant is keeping the position for now.
Roger wants to control from the top but Bessant keeps moving.
Roger tries to free his leg and advance position but Bessant is retaining full guard.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Roger stands up over Bessant, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.

Roger throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Bessant works some decent striking defense from the bottom.

In the pre-fight buildup videos we saw Roger working his ground and pound in the gym.
Bessant knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Roger on the ground.

Roger is looking to work some ground and pound but Bessant has wrist control.

Roger wants to pass the guard but Bessant is keeping the position.
Roger is working the ground and pound from guard. He might want to try advancing position though to get more of an impact.
Bessant pulls Roger in close to prevent any damage.
Roger with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Bessant looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Bessant is working hard here to advance position.

Roger is fighting to break Bessant's control of his arms but Bessant is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.

Bessant wants to sweep here but Roger controlling him for the moment.

Roger connects with a couple of short punches.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Roger is chipping away with strikes.
Roger has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Roger wants to control but Bessant is keeping him busy.

And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.

Bessant throws a hook but Roger avoids it easily.

Jolly Roger seems to be getting the better of the standup.
Roger scores with a crisp jab that stopped Bessant in his tracks.

Roger closes the distance and clinches up with Bessant, looking for a takedown. Roger pushes Bessant against the cage but Bessant circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Roger has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Bessant uses good head movement to avoid the hook from Roger.

Bessant takes a shot right to the liver - Bas would have been proud of that punch.
Roger misses with an uppercut
and Bessant connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.
Bessant with poor footwork there. He got himself in a bit of a tangle, enabling Roger to score with a decent uppercut.

Bessant keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.
Bessant walks into a straight right hand from Roger.
Roger shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Bessant but Bessant pushes him off and we're back to square one.
It looked like Bessant was looking amped, ready to throw a big counter but didn't commit.
John Bessant has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Jolly Roger.
Roger throws a right and a left that both miss.

Bessant is looking for a counter combo.
Roger dives in for a single leg takedown but Bessant sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage.
Roger misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Bessant bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes.
Roger shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Bessant as he jumps to the side.
A counter left hand to the body from Bessant misses its target.
John Bessant is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.

and Bessant counters with a crisp one two that drops Roger! Bessant thinks about following him to the mat for a moment but instead steps back and waves Roger to his feet! Roger is in big trouble!

Roger is breathing heavily.

Roger is trying hard to land a takedown here. Bessant sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.
Bessant feinted there with a counter leg kick.
Roger is still on wobbly legs! Can Bessant finish him?
Bessant scores with a slapping inside leg kick.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Roger takes a shot to the body in his stride.
Bessant fakes the body blow, causing Roger to drop his hands! Left hook to the temple! Roger goes stiff, and falls face first into the mat. Goodnight!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:14 of round 2, we have a winner by way of KO (Punch). John Bessant!
In his post fight interview, John Bessant started talking himself up. Luckily his charisma kept the crowd on side and gave him a good reception.
