This TWGC bout is 1 fifteen minute round in the lightweight division. Introducing today's competitors. In the red corner, competing out of Las Vegas, with a TWGC record of 12 wins and 11 losses; Joshua Brown! And in the blue corner, fighting out of New York, with a TWGC record of 1 wins and 0 losses; Rudy Rhod! The judges for this bout are Steve Montenegro, John Roberts and Anthony Taglia.
The fighters connect hands in the middle of the mat and we are under way. Brown clinches. Our sources have told us that Brown has been working on his elbows in the gym. Brown pulls guard. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though. Brown can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Rhod is looking to escape. Brown fails to move to back control. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Brown controlling the pace for now.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Brown fails to move to back control. Rhod wants to hold on but Brown pushes him away. Brown with some aggressive grappling here, looking for the finish.

Rhod is in a world of trouble here. He's outmatched on the ground here and he'd better get Brown off his back sharpish unless he wants to be submitted.

Brown has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent. Rhod felt the need to train up his defensive grappling in the buildup to the fight. Presumably he was expecting to be in a difficult position like this, so let's see if he can get out of it. Brown working for a choke but Rhod is defending well.

Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground. Rhod staying busy and making it hard for Brown to control. Brown is controlling his opponent, waiting for an opportunity to finish.

A lull in the action here as Brown stalls from top position. Rhod is not content to let Brown control the position. Rhod gets one leg under and gets the fight to half guard. Brown is figuring out what he wants to do next.

That's fourteen minutes gone in the round. Brown slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up. Brown trying to control the position from guard on top but Rhod is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Rhod looking to hit a scissor sweep but Brown is one step ahead there. Brown trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet. Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out! A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Rhod holds on and takes a little breather. Brown wants to control from the top but Rhod keeps moving.
And that's the end of the fight! Brown takes the fight on points by 8 to 0. After the fight, Joshua Brown was humble in paying tribute to his opponent but made it clear he wants to go on to bigger and better things. It seemed to go down well with the crowd who cheered him loudly. |
