PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Danny Rand (ranked 2322 p4p, 6401 weight class) and Marcus Matthison (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Rand comes to the cage accompanied by Wu Tang-Protect Ya Neck. Marcus Matthison has the power to score a knockout today if he connects clean with Danny Rand's chin.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 9 - 7 - 1, fighting out of Sydney, Danny Rand!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Marcus Matthison!
The judges for this bout are Donatello Bradman, Ron Honeybunn and John Mangel.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Matthison bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
Rand tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Matthison wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
Matthison cracks Rand with an elbow. That is naaassty.
Matthison trying to control the position but Rand is working away.
Rand sneaks a leg under to get back to half guard.

Rand looking to work for a kimura from the bottom.
Matthison seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Matthison frees up his trapped foot and advances to mount.
Rand really trying hard to get back to half guard here.

Matthison wants to control the pace but Rand is squirming around nicely.
Rand wants to control but Matthison is having none of it.
Rand tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Matthison pushing the pace here, looking to move to his opponents back and work for a finish.

Matthison is working on an americana here. Ooh, that looks pretty nasty! Nope, Rand has managed to escape the submission attempt.
Rand regains half guard.
Rand has his hands clasped together around Matthison's back. He's all about the action.
Matthison lands with an elbow from half guard - that looked like it hurt.

Matthison seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Rand does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
Rand tries to strike from the bottom but it doesn't land.

Matthison is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Rand defends it well.
Matthison is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.
Rand regains full guard. Nicely done.

Rand is looking for a triangle but Matthison pushes his legs off easily.

Matthison thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.

Rand has his foot on Matthison's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Matthison works his way back into a safe position though.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Matthison throws a strike but Rand rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.

Matthison tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Rand throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Matthison works some decent striking defense from the bottom.

Matthison looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Matthison is on top in guard.

Rand is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.

Matthison got a little sloppy there for a moment and Rand has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Matthison has managed to get both his arms back between Rand's legs - danger averted.
Rand looking for a sweep. Not yet Rand, not yet.
Matthison trying to control but Rand is working from the bottom.

Rand has his foot on Matthison's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Matthison works his way back into a safe position though.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Rand is breathing heavily.
Matthison wants to control from the top but Rand keeps moving.
Matthison keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of Rand's head.
Matthison is working Rand over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes.

Matthison is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Rand is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Rand has escaped and now he's on top!

Matthison keeping moving, preventing Rand from controlling successfully.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Marcus Matthison dominated that round.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!

Matthison shoots in for a double leg but Rand sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
Rand looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Matthison is fending him off so far but Rand persists. Nope, Matthison circles away and we're back to standing.
Matthison has a takedown stuffed.

Rand instigates a clinch.
Rand unloads a knee to the mid-section.
Matthison tries to break free but Rand pushes him back against the cage.
Rand comes over the top with an elbow. That landed flush.
Matthison takes a shot to the head.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Rand pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Rand shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Matthison defends it nicely.
Matthison looked like he wanted to counter with a punch but didn't throw it.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Rand showing good head movement there, avoiding the strikes from Matthison.
Rand lands the left hand.
Matthison has a nice red mark on his side after a thudding body kick by Rand.
Matthison shoots in for a takedown but Rand shows good takedown defense.
Danny Rand has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Marcus Matthison.
Rand thumps Matthison with a low kick.
Matthison shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Rand as he avoids it easily.
Matthison is breathing heavily.

Rand fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Matthison sprawls well initially but Rand persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
Matthison tries to get to full guard but Rand has control of the leg.
Rand wants to free his trapped foot but Matthison is holding on for dear life with his legs.
Matthison gets full guard.

Matthison wants to stand and escape but Rand is having none of it.
Rand sitting in guard here, content to control.
Rand trying to control but Matthison is working from the bottom.

Rand gets to his feet. Matthison looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!

Rand clinches with his opponent.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Matthison drops down for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Rand unloads a knee to the mid-section. Matthison lets out a prehistoric sounding urrrrgh.
With the fighters clinched against the cage, Rand creates a bit of distance for himself and scores with a nice uppercut.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Rand has double underhooks and is working for a body lock takedown. He's got it. The fighters land in half guard but Matthison regains guard immediately.
Rand won't allow Matthison to sweep him here.

Rand stands up from Matthison's guard - Rand perhaps looking for a knockout.
Rand's jab looks to have found its range, popping Matthison under the eye.
Rand throws a right hand that Matthison ducks under and follows up with a left that Matthison also avoids with ease.
Matthison tries to counter with a clinch but Rand shakes him off and moves away.

Matthison gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Rand to score an easy takedown into full guard.
Hammerfist, elbow! yells Rand's corner. There ya go! There ya go!

Matthison escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Rand gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Rand avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
Matthison is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

This has been an exciting period of action!

Rand is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Matthison pulls his head out easily.

Matthison is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
Rand trying to control from the bottom.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Danny Rand dominated that second round.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! And we move into the final round!

Rand swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Matthison.
Matthison shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
A jab from Rand finds it's way through Matthison's defenses.

Rand clinches up with Matthison and pushes him back against the cage.
A short right hand to the side of the head by Rand.

Danny Rand has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Marcus Matthison.
Matthison takes a knee right on the jaw!
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Rand lands an uppercut.
Rand lands a nice elbow.
Rand has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Matthison is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.

Matthison is trying to drag Rand to the mat but Rand just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there.
Rand landing some nice looking knees to the body.
Rand lands punches inside but they're not really causing much damage.
Matthison fails to pull the fight into his guard.
Matthison takes a knee to the side of the body.
Rand pushes Matthison back against the cage and lands a hook to the side of the head.
Rand connects with a nasty looking knee right to Matthison's face.

Matthison is rocked!
Matthison is looking for a takedown up against the cage. Rand gets underhooks though and prevents the takedown attempt.

Rand breaks from the clinch.
Jab, cross, leg kick. Nice combination by Rand!
Matthison is still on wobbly legs! Can Rand finish him?
Danny Rand is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

Matthison has his head slapped from side to side by a 3 punch combination. That must have hurt him.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Matthison tries for a takedown but Rand circles away easily
and Rand connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.

Rand pushes Matthison up against the cage in a clinch.
A shot in the inside from Rand.
Rand pushes Matthison back against the cage and unloads with a body punch.

Rand has moved round to his opponent's back and is looking for a suplex! Oh snap! He's tossed Matthison clear over his head and slammed him to the mat!

Matthison is trying escape back to his feet. He turns into his opponent's guard and eventually finds his way back to his feet.
Rand works over Matthison's head and body with a nice combination.
Rand looks to have improved his striking defense since last time we saw him fight.
Matthison shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Rand but Rand pushes him off and we're back to square one.

Rand moves into range and clinches up with Matthison.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Rand scores with a knee to the head.

Rand works for the underhooks and manages to get a trip takedown into guard.
Rand postures up and lands some nice ground and pound.

Rand stands up and waves to Matthison to follow him.
Rand cracks Matthison with a good shot that sees him stumbling back into the cage.
Rand throws a nice head kick!
Matthison slips a jab and a cross from Rand.
Matthison shoots in looking for a takedown but Rand manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Matthison's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.
Rand lands a high kick!
Rand throws a series of punches but Matthison avoids them all with ease.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
The fight stays on the outside here - Matthison looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Rand is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Matthison can do to turn this around?
Rand will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Matthison seems to have recovered his senses.
Rand avoids the head kick by Matthison.

Rand decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
Rand is keen to just control but Matthison is a slippery customer.

Rand is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.
Matthison works his way to full guard. Good work.
The crowd applaud the fighters' efforts here as the round comes to an end.
