Masvidal comes into a darkened arena with his song building. scarface kicks in, the lights come on and the crowd goes wild! What a showman! Jon Masvidal is the more experienced fighter, so let's see if that makes a difference tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the welterweight championship of the world!
Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Mickey Backman!
And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Jon Masvidal!
The judges for this bout are Aleksei Zolotukhin, Ivan Kurochkin and Konstantin Menshow.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Backman takes one on the chin but seems OK.
Backman shoots for a double leg takedown but Masvidal sprawls well. He's pushed Backman's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Backman bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes.
Masvidal scores with the left hand. Backman knows he should have avoided that one.
Backman throws a head kick that misses.
Masvidal swings away with a counter right hand but no contact made.
Masvidal misses the jab.
Masvidal scores with a sloppy right hand. Backman should have avoided that one.
Backman looks to have improved his striking defense since last time we saw him fight.
Horrible takedown attempt by Backman or perhaps it was just good defense by Masvidal, which made it look bad.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Masvidal takes a swing at Backman's ribcage but misses.
Backman feinted with a counter takedown.
A left and a right from Masvidal both land. Nice combination.

It looks like Mickey Backman has been cut.

Backman decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Backman tries to pass to full mount but Masvidal defends it.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Masvidal blocking the ground and pound attempt from Backman.
Masvidal is staying active underneath Backman, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
Masvidal won't allow Backman to pass to mount.
Backman wants to control but Masvidal is keeping him busy.
Masvidal is trying to stand back up but Backman is controlling him
Masvidal tries to get to full guard but Backman has control of the leg.
Backman has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Masvidal keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.
Backman is looking to advance position but Masvidal won't allow it.
Backman passes to full mount!
Masvidal tries to get back to half guard but can't.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
BOOM! Backman connects with a massive shot to the dome!
Backman takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
Backman wants to control the pace but Masvidal is squirming around nicely.
Masvidal tries to lock up and control but Backman gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.
Backman scores with a couple of good head shots there.

Masvidal is rocked!
Backman controlling from mount.
Masvidal is still in real trouble! Can Backman finish him?
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Backman postures up and throws a couple of big shots that have Masvidal in real trouble here! The ref calls for Masvidal to improve his position which he doesn't do, so the referee has no choice but to end the fight due to the strikes!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:59 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Mickey Backman!
