PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Robert Grandis (ranked 407 p4p, 150 weight class) and Gemechu McKraken (ranked 26 p4p, 11 weight class). Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 20 - 7 - 1, fighting out of Montreal, Robert Grandis!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 16 - 7 - 1, fighting out of Sydney, Gemechu McKraken!
The judges for this bout are Chris Edwards, James Atkins and Colin Fotheringham.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
No luck for McKraken with that takedown attempt.
McKraken throws a shot from downtown. Grandis moves away and avoids it.
McKraken fails with a takedown attempt.
Grandis ducks down and throws a hook to the body but McKraken moves away.
McKraken tries a counter takedown but it's more of a dummy move, and he uses it to push himself away.
The fighters circling - Grandis throws out the jab but it was never going to land.
McKraken looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Grandis is fending him off so far but McKraken persists. Nope, Grandis circles away and we're back to standing.
Robert Grandis has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Gemechu McKraken.
A kick lands to the mid section there for Grandis.
McKraken just misses with a punch to the body.
Grandis throwing a counter right hand but McKraken manages to avoid it.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
McKraken swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target.

Grandis leaves McKraken with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Grandis ducks low and lands a nice hook to the body of his opponent.
We've been told by Grandis's head coaches at The Foundry that he's been working on his takedown defense in preparation for this fight.

McKraken closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Grandis to the mat! Grandis manages to get full guard.
Grandis has control of McKraken's left arm, preventing McKraken from doing any damage.
Grandis looking to hit a scissor sweep but McKraken is one step ahead there.
McKraken wants to control from the top but Grandis keeps moving.
Grandis controls McKraken momentarily but McKraken frees himself.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
McKraken sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Grandis's guard.

McKraken is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.

McKraken looking to hit a scissor sweep but Grandis is one step ahead there.
McKraken has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.

McKraken looking for a guillotine here but Grandis defends easily.
McKraken controls Grandis momentarily but Grandis frees himself.
McKraken is controlling Grandis's posture.
McKraken looking for a sweep. Not yet McKraken, not yet.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
McKraken trying to keep a closed guard but Grandis is proving a slippery customer.
McKraken is pulling down on Grandis's head. It's preventing any offense from Grandis, at least for the moment.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
McKraken wants to sweep here but Grandis controlling him for the moment.
The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Robert Grandis will probably get the nod.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.

Grandis slips a straight right by McKraken.
Grandis fails with an attempt to clinch.
A looping hook to the body misses from Grandis. McKraken does a little dance to reset his feet.
McKraken drops down looking to force a counter takedown but Grandis defends it well.
McKraken walks into a left hand.
Grandis scores with a punch to the head.
McKraken fails with a takedown attempt.
McKraken closes the distance and clinches up with Grandis, looking for a takedown. McKraken pushes Grandis against the cage but Grandis circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Grandis drops his hands momentarily and McKraken takes advantage with a crisp shot to the head.

Grandis throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
McKraken moves into range and throws a lovely three punch combination.
Grandis shapes like he's going to throw a leg kick but settles back down.

McKraken misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Grandis.
Grandis was looking to counter that last move with a shot to the body but he didn't commit.
McKraken stumbles momentarily as he takes a strong leg kick from Grandis.

McKraken's coach down at McGrady FT was telling us pre-fight that they have been working on McKraken's balance. Obviously they view that as a key factor in the outcome of this fight.
Grandis misses the shot to the body.

McKraken fails miserably with a takedown attempt.

McKraken closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - McKraken lands in his opponent's guard.

McKraken cracks Grandis with a solid left hand.
Grandis manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. McKraken manages to get himself to full guard.

Grandis passes McKraken's right leg, so he's now in half guard.
McKraken is trying to control but can't.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.

Grandis seems to be working for a kimura but McKraken defends the submission attempt.
McKraken gets full guard.
McKraken not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.

McKraken is controlling Grandis's posture.
Grandis stands and throws McKraken's legs to the side, diving into side control.
Grandis works to advance to full mount. McKraken defends for a few seconds but eventually he succumbs.
McKraken regains half guard.
McKraken is doing well to control the position and prevent Grandis from advancing to side control.
Grandis is pressing down on McKraken's thigh, looking to free his foot. McKraken is holding on for now.

McKraken is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Grandis's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Grandis's back!
McKraken has Grandis flattened out and is raining down punches.
McKraken struggling to keep hold of the position.

McKraken is looking for the choke from the back position but Grandis is controlling his hands well.
Grandis tries to roll but McKraken sticks to his back.

Grandis is in a bad position with McKraken working for a choke. Grandis manages to spin nicely into guard and the danger is over for the moment.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Grandis wants to control from the top but McKraken keeps moving.

That was a close second round but I would say that Robert Grandis will probably get the nod.

McKraken will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.

McKraken tries to check a leg kick but that clearly hurt him.
McKraken ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Grandis moves away.

A nice inside leg kick there by Grandis. That's going to slow McKraken down.
Grandis misses with a hook. McKraken ducked under it nicely.

It appears Grandis was looking to counter with a kick there.

McKraken moves away from the strike by Grandis.
McKraken uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Grandis.
McKraken stooping low to avoid any incoming strikes and then lunges in with an uppercut come cross that lands flush.

Grandis throws a jab but it's blocked by McKraken.
Grandis lands with a right hand.
Grandis takes a swing at McKraken's ribcage but misses.
Grandis throws a leg kick which misses McKraken's front leg but catches the back leg as McKraken tries to avoid it.
Grandis is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that McKraken can do to turn this around?
McKraken gets his head snapped back by a nice shot there.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
McKraken ducks under a wild hook from Grandis.
McKraken throws a big shot that misses.
Gemechu McKraken seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
McKraken changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Grandis tries to avoid it but McKraken manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Grandis to the ground. Grandis escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from McKraken.

Grandis tries to buck McKraken off but McKraken is having none of it.
Grandis is working hard to escape and get back to his feet. After a battle for position, McKraken asserts his dominance and retains side control.
Gemechu McKraken has got the better of the ground game so far.

McKraken lands a knee to the body and a forearm to the face.
McKraken in side control lands a decent elbow.

McKraken goes for an armbar here - this could be all over! But no, Grandis has escaped beautifully and is now on top in side control! Oh, that's unlucky for McKraken but great work by Grandis.
Grandis wants to control but McKraken is keeping him busy.
McKraken sneaks back into half guard.

McKraken is looking to improve his position.
Gemechu McKraken has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
McKraken is refusing to be controlled, as Grandis sits in half guard.
Grandis prevents McKraken from improving his position.

And that's the end of the fight!
Robert Grandis showed his dominance in that final round.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Grandis, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.

After the fight, Robert Grandis was humble in paying tribute to his opponent but made it clear he wants to go on to bigger and better things. It seemed to go down well with the crowd who cheered him loudly.
