PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight kickboxing rules bout between Piger Whok (ranked 22025 p4p, 1521 weight class) and George Backman (ranked 494 p4p, 161 weight class). Whok comes into the arena with King of Kings - Motorhead blaring out of the sound system. Both these guys have solid standup skills and neither is particularly fantastic on the ground, so let's hope for a nice standup war!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 13 - 6 - 0, fighting out of New York, Piger Whok!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 13 - 15 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, George Backman!
The judges for this bout are Matti Vanhoillinen, Anni Minnemäki and Johanna Lukiainen.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Whok ducks under an overhand right and circles away with a smile on his face.
Backman throws a hook to the side of Whok's head but Whok sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.
Whok throws a push kick but Backman slaps the foot to one side.
Whok scores with a nice head shot.
Whok is looking to clinch.
Whok lands a leg kick that knocks Backman off balance momentarily.
Whok closes the distance looking to clinch
and Backman connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.
Whok is looking to take this fight into the clinch.
Backman throws out a counter right but Whok avoids it with no problem.
The sound of bone on bone echoes around the arena as Backman checks a leg kick.
Backman flicks out a counter leg kick but Whok steps away.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Whok attempts a low kick but it misses it's target.
Whok blocks a head kick by Backman.
Backman throws a body punch but Whok moves out of range.
That's a knee to de groin and it's over and out! Backman crumples to the ground after an illegal strike from Whok - the referee stops the clock and Backman gets 5 minutes to recover from that one. "I'm sorry" says Whok. Backman manages to get back to his feet and the fight resumes.
A head kick misses from Backman.
Backman is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.
Backman moves out of range of the body kick.
Whok looks to have improved his striking defense since last time we saw him fight.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Whok fakes a couple of low kicks, before throwing one on the third attempt. It connects and Backman has to reset his feet before getting ready to engage.
Whok throws a body kick but he was well out of range there.
Backman unleashes a big counter combination but Whok bobs and weaves and avoids any damage.
Backman takes an uppercut right on the jaw but it doesn't phase him.
Whok is looking to take this fight into the clinch.
A right-left combo lands from Whok.
Whok lands a nice shot to the body.
Backman misses with a low kick.
Whok throws a hook but Backman blocks it.
Backman takes a push kick to the midsection and stumbles backwards.
Backman tries to check a leg kick but that clearly hurt him.
Piger Whok seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Backman rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Whok moves out of range and avoids them all easily.
Nice jab there from Whok.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
A thudding body kick lands there by Whok!
Backman throws a body punch but Whok moves out of range.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Backman checks a leg kick.
Whok scores with a sloppy punch to the body. Not much technique there but it did the business.
A slapping leg kick lands for Whok.
Whok blocks a jab.
Whok looks to score with a jab to the body but Backman is just out of range.
Whok scores with a jab. Backman acknowledges it with a nod of the head.
Whok is looking to take this fight into the clinch.
Backman throws a sloppy head kick and Whok moves out of range easily.
A shot to the body from Whok misses
and Backman counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.
Backman pushing out the jab but it's not landing.
Backman circles away from the clinch attempt
and Backman cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.
Whok wants to clinch.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Whok throws the left hand but Backman avoids the punch easily.
Whok throws a predictable looking body shot
and Backman counters with a quick right hand to the jaw.
Whok wants to clinch up but Backman keeps it at a distance.
Backman connects with a jab.

Whok is rocked!
That kick from Whok tenderised Backman's leg. Backman is trying to keep his angry face on.
Whok does a little shimmy and throws a leg kick. The leg kick missed by a considerable margin though, making him look a little bit silly for doing the shimmy.
Whok misses with an uppercut
and Backman counters with a deadly accurate combination that rocks Whok badly! He tries to strike back but Backman puts an end to that with another precision combo that knocks Whok out cold! Oh man, Whok will never hear the end of this one!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:36 of round 1, we have a winner by way of KO (Punches). George Backman!
An out of breath George Backman thanked his loyal fans in his post fight interview, giving them credit for his success over the course of his career.
