The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
nichols ducks down and throws a hook to the body.
vazquez throws a quick inside leg kick.

nichols closes the distance and pushes vazquez back into the cage.
nichols takes an elbow to the forehead.
vazquez lands a hook to the side of the head.
vazquez tries to land a shot to the body but it's blocked.

vazquez breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
vazquez throws a solid leg kick but nichols takes the impact on his shin and smiles at vazquez.
vazquez bobbing and weaving, closes the distance and lands a hook to the side of nichols's head.
vazquez misses with a series of wild punches.
nichols avoids the head kick by vazquez.
vazquez tries to grapple but his opponent circles

and nichols counters with a nice double leg into half guard.
vazquez trying to hold on to nichols's head to control him but nichols postures up.
nichols blocks the strikes from vazquez.
nichols tries to stand and escape but vazquez is controlling the position.

nichols stands, ready to strike. The ref makes him back up and allows vazquez to get to his feet.

nichols takes one on the chin but keeps coming.

vazquez instigates a clinch.

vazquez misses with a few strikes there.
vazquez tries to clinch but nichols is having none of it.

nichols stands and steps away. vazquez gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.
vazquez stuffs the takedown.
nichols blocks a jab.

vazquez doesn't succeed with the takedown

and nichols holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.

vazquez goes for a body shot but it's blocked.
vazquez lands an uppercut.

nichols pulls guard successfully.
nichols has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
vazquez wants to pass the guard but nichols is keeping the position.

nichols has thrown up a leg looking for a triangle. vazquez doesn't defend quickly enough and nichols has managed to lock this one up! Can vazquez escape?! NO! He's tapping out! Damn, that was a quick submission - congrats to nichols on a fantastic submission victory.
