Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of 10 - 10 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Tigran Minasian! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of 5 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Tomohiro Tanahashi! The judges for this bout are Frank Dennis, Tiny Johnson and Robert Twigg.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Minasian tries to clinch but Tanahashi moves away enabling Tanahashi to counter with a crisp jab. Minasian shoots in but doesn't get the takedown and Tanahashi counters with a three punch combo that has Minasian backing up. Minasian nods at Tanahashi to acknowledge the strikes. Minasian misses with a takedown attempt and Tanahashi counters with a nice uppercut. Minasian shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Tigran Minasian. That's going to take a lot out of him. Minasian closes this distance looking for a takedown but Tanahashi circles away. Minasian with a lazy takedown attempt and Tanahashi connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle. Minasian with a lazy takedown attempt and Tanahashi counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw. Tanahashi misses with an uppercut. Minasian saw that one coming. Minasian fails with a takedown attempt. Tanahashi is loading up here, looking for a big counter of his own. Minasian tries to grapple but his opponent circles and Tanahashi counters with a nice uppercut. This has been an exciting period of action! Minasian drives through with a takedown into Tanahashi's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position. Tanahashi has his feet on Minasian's hips. He pushes off and gets to his feet. Minasian bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes. We've been informed that Tanahashi has been sparring a lot of Muay Thai in the buildup to this fight so let's see if that has an impact on the result. Minasian tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion. Minasian fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt. Tigran Minasian seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Minasian shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Tanahashi defends it nicely. Minasian misses with a takedown attempt and Tanahashi counters with a left and a right that stings Minasian. Minasian doesn't succeed with the takedown and Tanahashi counters with a stiff right hand.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Minasian steps to his left, right into the path of a big body kick from Tanahashi. That one must have hurt. Minasian is breathing heavily. Minasian shoots and misses and Tanahashi counters with a straight right hand. Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show! Minasian takes a body punch that cleary hurt but he's trying not to show any weakness. Minasian gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily and Tanahashi counters with a right hand to the body. Tomohiro Tanahashi is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs. Minasian takes a shot right to the bread basket. Minasian shoots in and drives through. Tanahashi sprawls well. Tanahashi swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target. Minasian misses with a takedown attempt and Tanahashi counters with a three punch combo that has Minasian backing up. Minasian nods at Tanahashi to acknowledge the strikes. Tanahashi scores with the left hand. Minasian knows he should have avoided that one. Tanahashi looks to score with a jab to the body but Minasian is just out of range. Tanahashi listening to his corner there, landing a nice uppercut.
Minasian is rocked! Minasian gets his head snapped back by a nice shot there. Oh Minasian is still all over the place! His legs are completely gone! Will he be able to recover?!! Tanahashi works the jab nicely.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Minasian tries for a takedown but Tanahashi circles away easily and Tanahashi counters with a left to the body. Minasian gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily and Tanahashi counters with a straight right hand. Tanahashi steps in with a hook that catches Minasian right on the chin and knocks him to the floor! Tanahashi follows him down with more strikes and that's all she wrote! Minasian looks absolutely devastated.
Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:25 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Tomohiro Tanahashi! After winning the bout, Tomohiro Tanahashi thanked all his fans and promised he'd do even better in his next fight. The crowd seemed to love his humility.
