PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Greg Woodley (ranked 4408 p4p, 4456 weight class) and Alejandro Japon (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Alejandro Japon told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Greg Woodley!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Alejandro Japon!
The judges for this bout are Daniel Franklin, Alan Glass and Wesley Smith.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Woodley pushes forward with a 1-2 combination that forces Japon back to the cage. Woodley follows up with a solid lead hook to the liver.
Woodley could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.

Woodley clinches.

Woodley's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Woodley throws a combination. Japon tries to block but a couple of punches get through.
No luck for Woodley with that takedown attempt.
Japon throws a shot from downtown. Woodley moves away and avoids it.
Woodley has a takedown stuffed.
Woodley darts in looking for a takedown but Japon gets double underhooks and turns Woodley into the cage.

Woodley bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Japon misses with a hook. Woodley ducked under it nicely.

Woodley throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Japon.

Woodley shoots in looking for a takedown. Japon tries to sprawl out of it but Woodley keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Japon manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.

and Woodley counters with a body kick that brings a smile to the face of both fighters.

and Japon cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.

Woodley fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Japon, pushing him back against the cage.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Japon wants to break free but Woodley has control.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Woodley moves in looking to clinch but Japon pushes him off.
And an attempted straight right on the counter from Japon! But no joy.

Japon tries to bum rush Woodley with a series of wild strikes but Woodley uses good footwork to avoid the assault.

Japon throws a looping overhand right but Woodley ducks down to avoid it.
Woodley uses good head movement to avoid the hook from Japon.

Japon is looking to work some ground and pound but Woodley has wrist control.

The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Woodley working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Japon doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Japon manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Woodley is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.

That was a close second round but I would say that Greg Woodley will probably get the nod.

Japon really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Woodley. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

The fighters are working up against the cage. Woodley manages to wriggle his way back to his feet, so the fighters are now clinched against the cage.

The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
