PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Brett Shoenfeld (ranked 276 p4p, 751 weight class) and Millard Masters (ranked 17 p4p, 46 weight class). Masters has chosen Enter the Sandman as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. Brett Shoenfeld has the better chin. Will he look to stand and bang today?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the bantamweight championship of the world!
Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 13 - 10 - 0, fighting out of New York, Brett Shoenfeld!
And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 12 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Millard Masters!
The judges for this bout are James Ackerman, Richard Clark and William Gold.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Shoenfeld takes a swing at Masters's ribcage but misses.
Masters throws out a counter right but Shoenfeld avoids it with no problem.
Shoenfeld misses with a straight left.
Shoenfeld moves out of range of the strikes.
Masters looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.
Shoenfeld throws out a token jab with nothing on it.
Masters slaps away a takedown attempt from Shoenfeld, before circling back to the center of the mat.
Masters stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Masters wants it to stay on the feet.
Shoenfeld looks to have improved his striking defense since last time we saw him fight.
Shoenfeld throws a big shot that misses.
Masters misses with the combination.
Masters throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Shoenfeld half commits to a counter takedown before pushing away, out of range.

Shoenfeld lunges at Masters with a hook that half lands and is half blocked by Masters's hand.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Shoenfeld passes Masters's right leg, so he's now in half guard.
Shoenfeld wants to pass the guard but Masters is defending well.
Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Shoenfeld in particular looking to stall.

Masters makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Masters.
Shoenfeld passes Masters's right leg, so he's now in half guard.

Shoenfeld tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Shoenfeld has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

Masters is positioning himself to get back to half guard.
Shoenfeld takes a little break here. Masters wants to take advantage but he is being controlled well.
Masters is trying to control Shoenfeld's posture but Shoenfeld avoids it.
Shoenfeld tries to move to mount but Masters blocks the move with his legs.
Masters tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Shoenfeld wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
Masters is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.

Shoenfeld trying to control the action but Masters is working from the bottom.

Shoenfeld goes for an armbar here - this could be all over! But no, Masters has escaped beautifully and is now on top in side control! Oh, that's unlucky for Shoenfeld but great work by Masters.

Shoenfeld is sneaking out the side here. He's bucked Masters off and has taken his back!
Masters prevents Shoenfeld from getting a body triangle.

Shoenfeld looking to break Masters's wrist control so he can sink in the choke. Masters remaining controlled and patient though - he really has to keep calm otherwise Shoenfeld will wrap this one up with the rear naked choke!

Masters tries to escape the position - he's now mounted. Is that better or worse? Hard to tell!
Shoenfeld fails to move to back control.
Masters slips a leg in and gets back to half guard.
Shoenfeld prevents Masters from improving his position.
Shoenfeld wants to pass the guard but Masters is defending well.
Masters has found himself in a tricky position here. He's been working his transitions in training so let's see if he can work his way out of it.
Masters manages to get to full guard.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Shoenfeld shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Masters manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.
Shoenfeld won't allow Masters to sweep him here.
Masters can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Shoenfeld controls the pace.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Masters is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Masters wants to control from the top but Shoenfeld keeps moving.

Shoenfeld looking to hit a scissor sweep but Masters is one step ahead there.
Masters pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Shoenfeld is keeping the position for now.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Shoenfeld keeping moving, preventing Masters from controlling successfully.

Shoenfeld working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Masters doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Oh but Shoenfeld is tightening it up a little... Masters has to be careful here... He's got his foot tucked under now, this looks tight! Masters reacted too slowly and this one could be over in a matter of seconds! YES! Masters taps out! Nice BJJ there by Shoenfeld!

Millard Masters was interviewed post fight and said 'Damn, I will go back to the gym and get stronger'.
