This TWGC bout is 1 fifteen minute round in the middleweight division. Introducing today's competitors. In the red corner, competing out of Las Vegas, with a TWGC record of 0 wins and 5 losses; Mark Merel! And in the blue corner, fighting out of New York, with a TWGC record of 2 wins and 2 losses; Michael Cruz! The judges for this bout are Elvis Blanc, Gregory Folan and Dillan Fox.
The official calls the fighters to the middle and the contest is under way. Merel scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice. Score +4 for clean takedown past guard: Merel (4) vs (0) Cruz Merel working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it. Cruz struggling a bit here. Merel trying to control the action but Cruz is working from the bottom. Cruz tries to get back to half guard but can't. Merel will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Merel goes for an armbar here - this could be all over! But no, Cruz has escaped beautifully and is now on top in side control! Oh, that's unlucky for Merel but great work by Cruz. That's one minute gone in the round. Cruz is staying tight to Merel's torso, preventing him from escaping. You can see the frustration on Merel's face, being in this tough position on the bottom. Cruz controlling the position from side mount. Cruz tries to advance to mount but can't. Cruz goes for an armbar here - this could be all over! That's two minutes gone in the round. Cruz is not content to let Merel control the position. You can see the frustration on Cruz's face, being in this tough position on the bottom. Cruz manages to work his way to half guard, despite Merel's best efforts. Cruz tries to get to full guard but Merel has control of the leg. Cruz is trying to maintain the position but Merel is very close to passing his half guard.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Cruz is concentrating on defense, preventing Merel from advancing position. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Cruz is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though. Cruz trying to control here.

He's left an arm up in the air though and Merel has latched onto it... Big trouble! Merel pivots for an armbar - it's in tight and it Cruz is tapping in no time flat! Great counter grappling there from Merel!
