PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Dillian Davies (ranked 4387 p4p, 24543 weight class) and Thaddeus Matthews (ranked 497 p4p, 0 weight class). Well, I have no idea who's going to take this one!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, Dillian Davies!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of London, Thaddeus Matthews!
The judges for this bout are Colin Fotheringham, Chris Edwards and Andrew Berry.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Davies shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Matthews but Matthews pushes him off and we're back to square one.
Matthews unleashes a big counter combination but Davies bobs and weaves and avoids any damage.
Davies changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Matthews tries to avoid it but Davies manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Matthews to the ground. Matthews escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Matthews circles away from the clinch attempt

and Matthews counters with a nice double leg into half guard.
The referee calls for the fighters to work.
Davies tries to roll over but Matthews keeps him under control.
Davies is trying to defend against the ground and pound but Matthews scores with a couple of nice shots.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Matthews performing his best blanket impression for a moment.
Matthews seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime.

Matthews content to control rather than advance.
Davies wants to improve his position but Matthews is controlling well.
Matthews has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Davies slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work.
Matthews is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
Matthews stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Davies swivels though and keeps the full guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Matthews is working Davies over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes.
Matthews wants to control from the top but Davies keeps moving.
Matthews's corner is telling him to maintain position.
Matthews working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Davies's head.
Matthews advances to half guard.
Davies trying to control here.
Matthews is controlling the pace.
Matthews tries to pass to full mount but Davies defends it.
The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Matthews shoots in and bounces Davies off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.
Davies looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Davies knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Matthews on the ground.

Matthews wanted to stand there but Davies had control of the position.
Davies looking to hit a scissor sweep but Matthews is one step ahead there.
Davies throwing some rather feeble looking strikes off his back.
Matthews advances position into side control!
Davies struggling a bit here.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Matthews has control of an arm but Davies manages to advance to Matthews's back!

The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!

A telegraphed takedown attempt from Davies is defended easily by Matthews.

Matthews moves into range and clinches up with Davies.

Matthews breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Matthews shoots in but Davies avoids the takedown attempt easily.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Matthews shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Davies pinned against the cage. Davies gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Matthews fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.

Davies lands a left and a right that send Matthews crashing to the mat, dazed. Davies thinks about following him to the mat but decides to wave him back up to his feet!

It looks like Thaddeus Matthews has been cut.
Dillian Davies is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

Matthews tries to clinch but Davies is having none of it.
Davies tries to counter with a takedown but Matthews is quick to defend against it.
Davies throws a low kick but it's checked well by Matthews.
Davies goes for a double leg but Matthews avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Matthews continues to drive forward.

Davies is trying to trip Matthews. He has hold of a leg but Matthews is hopping around, keeping his balance for the moment. Davies persists though and gets the takedown into guard.

Matthews should think about turning a few of those tyres round his middle into muscle if he wants people to take him seriously as an athlete.

Matthews has his foot on Davies's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Davies works his way back into a safe position though.

It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.

Davies looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into side control! Oh, that's bad for Matthews!

Davies wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Matthews, who protects the arm well.

Matthews manages to get one leg in to regain half guard.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Matthews is doing well to control the position and prevent Davies from advancing to side control.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Matthews can do anything to dispel that myth.
Matthews is looking to control Davies's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Matthews avoid being mounted?

Davies closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Matthews did well to prevent Davies getting side control.

Matthews is trying to avoid being dragged into an even worse position than he's already in but Davies is staying active.
Davies is pressing down on Matthews's thigh, looking to free his foot. Matthews is holding on for now.

Davies keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of Matthews's head.
Matthews controls Davies momentarily but Davies frees himself.
Matthews bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Davies's guard.

Davies lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard.

Davies throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Matthews works some decent striking defense from the bottom.

Davies trying to control the position from guard on top but Matthews is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Matthews bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Davies's guard.

Matthews connects with a couple of short punches.
Matthews is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.
Davies doesn't do any damage with a couple of strikes from the bottom.
Davies can't keep his opponent in guard - Matthews advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.

That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Dillian Davies.
I think Davies has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
