PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Gamba Osaka (ranked 4360 p4p, 2975 weight class) and Royce Gracie (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Gamba Osaka!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Royce Gracie!
The judges for this bout are Thiago Cunha, Paulo Santos and Daniel Cesar.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Gracie misses with a kick to the body.

Osaka closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.

Gracie sneaks out the side door and pushes Osaka away - he's back to his feet. The crowd show their appreciation for the escape.

Osaka gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Gracie to score an easy takedown into full guard.

Osaka is desperately trying to improve his position but Gracie has a good base and remains in mount.

Gracie breaks from Osaka's wrist control and lands an elbow.
Gracie avoids the attempt from Osaka to control.
Gracie throws an elbow from mount that misses. Lucky escape for Osaka because Gracie loaded up on that one.
Osaka is squirming around, avoiding Gracie's attempts to control the action.
Osaka is flailing around like a fish out of water, trying to land strikes.
Osaka tries to lock up and control but Gracie gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.
Gracie tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.

Osaka wants to control but instead he gets his guard passed and Gracie is now in half guard.
Gracie is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen.
Gracie wants to take a breather but Osaka is having none of it.

Royce Gracie dominated that round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.

A decent looking cross lands there for Osaka.

Osaka gets double underhooks and manages to take the fight to the ground.

Gracie is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Gracie is pushing down on Osaka's leg trying to pass to half guard. Osaka is fighting to maintain full guard but Gracie has managed to sneak the leg through.

Gracie seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. And we move into the final round!


Gracie closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Osaka to the mat! Osaka manages to get full guard.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

Osaka is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Gracie is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

Gracie has dropped down and is working for a takedown. Osaka is trying to keep an underhook but Gracie manages to get the takedown into half guard.

And that's the end of the fight!
Royce Gracie comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Gracie has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.

Royce Gracie tried to hype himself up post fight but didn't word it too well and it ended up with him sounding like a bit of a tool.
