Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Snail Tail (ranked 1293 p4p, 2084 weight class) and Pedro Phillips (ranked 179 p4p, 272 weight class). Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the lightweight championship of the world!
Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 7 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Snail Tail!
And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 7 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Pedro Phillips!
The judges for this bout are Sam Margolis, James Atkins and Andrew Berry.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Phillips forces Tail back against the cage and clinches.

Phillips pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Phillips misses with a straight left.
Pedro Phillips seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Phillips fails with an attempt to clinch.
Phillips throws a right hand that Tail ducks under and follows up with a left that Tail also avoids with ease.
Phillips throws a sloppy head kick and Tail moves out of range easily.
Tail drops down looking for a counter takedown but Phillips sprawls and moves away.

Phillips has Tail up against the cage in a clinch.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Phillips using the Thai plumb to throw knees but Tail has his back arched nicely, preventing the strike.
Tail avoids the elbow strike from Phillips, against the cage.
Tail takes a knee to the side of the body.
Tail has been talking about how he's improved his wrestling in the run up to the fight so let's see if that's enough to sway the balance.
With the two fighters working up against the cage, Phillips just misses with a elbow thrown towards Tail's brow.

Tail works for the underhooks and manages to get a trip takedown into guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Tail is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Phillips defends it well.

Tail is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Phillips sees it coming and defends easily.

Tail looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Phillips has a hand on Tail's thigh, trying to get back to full guard. Tail takes advantage of the position though and mounts him!

Tail looks like he's working for a submission but he's not found anything just yet.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Phillips is trying desperately to improve position.
Phillips is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.

Tail is in full mount, looking to secure a guillotine but Phillips is surviving well by controlling Tail's body position as best he can.

Tail jumps to the side looking to secure the arm triangle…. Ooooh, that looks tight… Phillips is gargling but he's managed to escape! Nice work there by Phillips and Tail has given up the dominant position trying to land that submission.

A close round but Pedro Phillips will probably get the nod.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare each other down, ready to get back to the action.

Pedro Phillips seems to be working more effectively in the clinch in the fight so far.

Tail has dropped down and is looking to force the takedown but it's defended by Phillips after a bit of a struggle.
Phillips looking to throw knees to the head but Tail is blocking nicely.
The step up in weight doesn't seem to be a problem for Phillips. He's performing admirably here against the bigger man.

and Tail counters with a nice double leg into side control. Phillips won't be happy with that.
Phillips tries to get back to his feet but has found himself mounted instead. Damn, that's gotta suck.

Phillips really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Tail. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Tail takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.

The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Phillips is trying desperately to improve position.
Tail trying to control but Phillips is having none of it.

Tail is going oldschool here, as he tries to force Phillips to tap using a forearm choke. This isn't 1993 though, so Phillips shrugs it off.

Phillips is desperately trying to get back to half guard.

Tail goes for an armbar but he's not got it… Phillips turns into him and now he's in Tail's guard.
Phillips has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

Tail has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Phillips can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Snail Tail overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Phillips is looking to stand up but Tail won't let him.

Tail looking to control the pace of the fight rather than finish it.
Phillips would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.
