PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Graham Mantle (ranked 1242 p4p, 2033 weight class) and Hugo Loris (ranked 144 p4p, 213 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 10 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Graham Mantle!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 5 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Hugo Loris!
The judges for this bout are Robert Twigg, Daniel Franklin and Frank Dennis.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Mantle connects with a crisp jab.
A big right from Loris misses.
Mantle changes levels looking for a counter takedown but doesn't commit.
Good exchange - Loris coming out on top.
Loris misses with a shot to the body
and Mantle counters with a shot to the ribs. That looked like it hurt.
Mantle takes a jab on the nose there. A little bit of blood seems to be coming out. Hopefully that won't affect his breathing.

Mantle throws out a loose jab but Loris uses good head movement to avoid it.

Loris with poor footwork there. He got himself in a bit of a tangle, enabling Mantle to score with a decent uppercut.

Loris clobbers Mantle with an overhand right that has the crowd gasping. That made a horrendous noise.

Mantle walks into a left hand.

Loris looking to throw a kick but he's pulled out of it.
Mantle throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Loris throws out a counter right but Mantle avoids it with no problem.

A slow jab from Loris misses its intended target.
Mantle swings for the body but Loris moves out of range.
Loris lands a slapping body shot.
We've been informed that Loris has been sparring a lot of Muay Thai in the buildup to this fight so let's see if that has an impact on the result.

enabling Loris to counter with a crisp jab.
Loris connects with a looping left hand that seems like it dazed Mantle momentarily.

Mantle lands a jab. Then a cross. Then finally a nice hook to the body. Good work there by Mantle.

Mantle uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Loris.

Loris lands a leg kick. The shin dug right into the meat of the thigh.
Loris swings for the body but Mantle moves out of range.
Mantle swung with a counter right hand that didn't connect.
Loris throws a nice outside leg kick.
Mantle looks to land a combination but Loris avoids it well.
Loris doesn't react quick enough there as he takes a shot to the body.
Decent striking displayed by Loris there.
Mantle throws the left hand but Loris avoids the punch easily.
Mantle looks to have improved his striking defense since last time we saw him fight.
A shot to the body from Loris misses
and Mantle cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.
Mantle thuds his right hand into Loris's forehead from close range. That could be painful for both fighters.

Loris shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Mantle manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.
Mantle looking to control the pace of the fight rather than finish it.

Mantle lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard.

Mantle working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Loris's head.

Mantle got a little sloppy there for a moment and Loris has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Mantle has managed to get both his arms back between Loris's legs - danger averted.

A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Loris holds on and takes a little breather.

Loris looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.

Loris is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Mantle defends well.
Mantle trying to control but Loris is working from the bottom.

Loris is in a good position here but he's just trying to control... And he's not even managing to do that successfully.

A close round but Hugo Loris will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.

Mantle tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Loris was well out of range. Poor timing from Mantle.
Mantle sets himself, and Loris steps forward looking for the clinch! Mantle avoids it this time.

Mantle's corner calls for a 1, 2 combination and Mantle duly obliges.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Loris shoots in for a double leg but Mantle sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.

Mantle smiles there as he lands a nice right hand right on the button.
Mantle lands a beauty of a right hand that gets the crowd cheering.
Mantle avoids the body shot from Loris.
Mantle scores with a reasonable looking shot to the body. Loris doesn't seem bothered though.

Mantle takes a thudding leg kick, right into the meat of the thigh.
The sound of bone on bone echoes around the arena as Mantle checks a leg kick.
Loris throws a front kick aimed at Mantle's knee but Mantle avoids it well.
Loris feints and then cracks Mantle's leading leg with a nice low kick. He's obviously looking to slow Mantle down.

and Loris counters with a body kick that stops Mantle in his tracks momentarily.
Loris connects with a body shot that sends Mantle's belly button to the back.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Well, he's not going to score with shots like that. A lazy body kick attempt from Loris.

and Mantle counters with a single leg into guard. Loris didn't expect that.

Mantle seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Loris for as long as he can get away with.

Loris had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Mantle defends it easily.

Loris is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.

Loris is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Mantle defends well.

Loris is looking for a triangle but Mantle pushes his legs off easily.
Mantle throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Loris works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
Mantle is looking to work some ground and pound but Loris has wrist control.
Mantle has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

Loris working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Mantle doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Mantle manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Mantle is working Loris over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes.

That was a close second round but I would say that Graham Mantle will probably get the nod.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. This is the final round!

Loris lands with a nice low kick. That'll leave a bruise.
Mantle throws a predictable looking body shot
and Loris makes him pay by landing a nice hook to the body before moving out of range.
Mantle is trying hard to land a takedown here. Loris sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.
And an attempted straight right on the counter from Loris! But no joy.

Mantle fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Loris manages to avoid it.

Loris closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Mantle did well to prevent Loris getting side control.
This has been an exciting period of action!

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
A clash of legs there as Mantle blocks the low kick.
Loris connects with a leg kick. He turned his hip over nicely there.
Sloppy strikes from Mantle. Those never looked like landing.
Mantle bobs and weaves and unloads with a good uppercut.

That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Graham Mantle.
I think Mantle has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
