PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Jushin Liger (ranked 24732 p4p, 23760 weight class) and George Marcus (ranked 590 p4p, 578 weight class). Rumors backstage are that the fighters have been paid to keep it standing but we know that would never happen in MMA!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Jushin Liger!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, George Marcus!
The judges for this bout are Joseph Jones, Steve Montenegro and Chad Campbell.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Liger throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Marcus's waist but Marcus gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Liger off to one side.
Marcus throws a wild body kick that Liger sees coming a mile off.

Marcus gets the takedown into side control.
Marcus is looking to take a break and control but Liger is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Liger is looking for a sweep.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Liger has improved his flexibility recently so we will have to see if he can use that to his advantage.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Liger lands with a nice looking elbow that stuns Marcus.

Marcus is displaying good submission defense - not really looking in danger of submitting to the rear naked choke at the moment. That could change in an instant of course if Liger gets his way!

Liger pulls Marcus in close to his closed guard and prevents Marcus from doing any damage or advancing position.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.

Liger working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Marcus doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Marcus manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Liger on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Liger tries to get out of the position.

Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Liger in particular looking to stall.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Marcus tries to regain full guard. Instead though, Liger has advanced to mount. Uh oh.

Liger takes advantage of the dominant position to land a couple of big hammer fists.

Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Liger wants to control from the top but Marcus keeps moving.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

A close second round but George Marcus will probably get the nod - 10:9.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! And we move into the final round!


Marcus has Liger up against the cage in a clinch.

Liger keeping moving, preventing Marcus from controlling successfully.
Marcus must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

Marcus decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Liger, up you get!

Marcus is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Marcus wants to sweep but no luck.
Liger controls from within his opponent's guard.

Liger controls the pace of the fight for a moment.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.

A combination from Marcus does no damage.
Marcus is looking to take this fight into the clinch.
Liger appears to be looking for a counter takedown.
Liger goes for a double leg but Marcus avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Marcus continues to drive forward.
Liger tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.

Marcus's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.

Marcus bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Marcus throwing strikes but Liger manages to buck up and roll into a nice reversal - now he's on top in side control!
Marcus wants to control but Liger postures up.

Liger tries for a kimura but Marcus is defending well.

Liger looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything.

Marcus regains half guard.
Marcus trying to hold on to Liger's head to control him but Liger postures up.
Marcus has hold of Liger's hands but Liger slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow.
Marcus trying to control from the bottom.
Liger landing with strikes to the body and head, softening up his opponent.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Marcus wants to control but Liger is keeping busy and won't allow it.
Marcus tries to kick Liger off but Liger keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.
Marcus makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Marcus.

And that's the end of the fight!
I would just about give that final round to George Marcus.
I think Marcus has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
