PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Ion Ivanov (ranked 4300 p4p, 24268 weight class) and Chris Diaz (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Chris Diaz will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Ion Ivanov!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 3 - 0, fighting out of New York, Chris Diaz!
The judges for this bout are Viktor Lagutenko, Aleksandr Martynov and Ivan Kurochkin.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Ivanov blocks a head kick by Diaz.
Diaz changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Ivanov tries to avoid it but Diaz manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Ivanov to the ground. Ivanov escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.

Diaz shoots in for a takedown but Ivanov shows good takedown defense.
Ion Ivanov has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Chris Diaz.

Ivanov fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Diaz sprawls well initially but Ivanov persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
Diaz is staying active underneath Ivanov, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
Ivanov is taking a breather. Diaz says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.
Ivanov seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Diaz for as long as he can get away with.

Diaz throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.

Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Diaz slips a nice elbow through Ivanov's hands, connecting with Ivanov's forehead.
The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Diaz connects with a nice short shot to Ivanov's temple.
Diaz is looking to advance position but Ivanov won't allow it.

Diaz is working for a submission of some sort.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Diaz is looking to take a break and control but Ivanov is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

A close second round but Chris Diaz will probably get the nod - 10:9.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! Let's get this one finished - here comes the final round!

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.

Ivanov looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Ivanov will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
And Diaz tries to counter it with a takedown but Ivanov pushes his down on his head and steps out.

Diaz darts in and clinches Ivanov up against the cage.
Diaz is working on a leg, looking for a takedown but Ivanov is defending well.
Diaz lands a knee to the body.

Ivanov escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.

Ivanov appears to be looking for a big counter.
Horrible takedown attempt by Ivanov or perhaps it was just good defense by Diaz, which made it look bad.
Donk. Diaz catches Ivanov right on the button with a cross.
Ivanov darts in and out, connecting with a jab.

Diaz breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.

Diaz changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Ivanov looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.

Diaz tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.

Diaz is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Ivanov has escaped the position, nice work there.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

A bit of a lull in the action. I'm sure it will pick up again soon... even if the ref has to physically pick them up and put them back on their feet.
