PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Dios Diaz (ranked 4416 p4p, 4397 weight class) and Miro Rusev (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Dios Diaz!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Miro Rusev!
The judges for this bout are Gwen Towbar, Robert Twigg and George Francis.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
A head kick by Diaz misses
and Rusev counters with a series of strikes. Diaz will be more careful next time no doubt.
Rusev tries to close the distance and clinch but Diaz swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Diaz scores with a kick to the body.
Rusev throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Diaz's waist but Diaz gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Rusev off to one side.
Rusev keeps the fight on the outside.
Diaz is on the wrong end of a nice combination from Rusev.
Diaz swinging wildly here.
Rusev avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Rusev lands a nice looking body shot.
Rusev misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Diaz has managed to clinch.
Rusev prevents the takedown attempt.

Rusev ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Rusev no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.

Rusev is controlling Diaz's posture.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Diaz controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
Diaz tries to free his leg and advance position but Rusev is retaining full guard.
Diaz is looking to work some ground and pound but Rusev has wrist control.

Rusev is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
Diaz is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.
Diaz wants to control from the top but Rusev keeps moving.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Diaz trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up.
Rusev throws a low kick but his opponent is out of range.
Diaz shoots in for a takedown but Rusev shows good takedown defense.
Rusev stuffs the takedown.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Dios Diaz. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Rusev is trying hard to land a takedown here. Diaz sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.
Rusev fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Diaz avoids it really well and circles away.
Rusev changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Diaz tries to avoid it but Rusev manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Diaz to the ground. Diaz escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.

Diaz has closed the distance and engaged Rusev in a clinch.

Rusev breaks the clinch.

Diaz tries to keep at a distance but Rusev has taken the fight into the clinch.
Diaz drops down looking for an ankle pick but Rusev pulls his leg out and moves away.
Diaz slaps away a takedown attempt from Rusev, before circling back to the center of the mat.
Rusev looks winded!
Diaz lands with a hook. Rusev tried to avoid it but it clipped the top of his head.

Rusev pushes Diaz up against the cage in a clinch.
Rusev is looking to break free of the clinch but Diaz has double underhooks.
Diaz tries to pull guard but Rusev won't allow it.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Rusev jumps guard but Diaz turns him against the cage and keeps the fight standing.

Diaz breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Diaz has a takedown stuffed.
Diaz lands a jab, followed by a cross and another cross, as Rusev backs up against the cage.
Rusev tries to clinch up but Diaz circles away and keeps his distance.
Rusev misses with a series of wild punches.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Rusev looks for a takedown but Diaz sprawls well.
Rusev gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily
and Diaz counters with a straight right hand.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Miro Rusev will probably get the nod.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.

Rusev darts in looking for a takedown but Diaz gets double underhooks and turns Rusev into the cage.
Rusev shoots for a takedown but Diaz saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.

Diaz rushes Rusev and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.
Rusev wants a takedown.
Dios Diaz has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Miro Rusev.
Rusev tries a shoulder strike but it doesn't do any damage.
Rusev tries to break the clinch but Diaz is controlling the position.
Diaz dodges an elbow strike from Rusev.
Rusev drops down looking for an ankle pick but Diaz pulls his leg out and moves away.
Diaz fails to land the takedown.
Rusev is breathing heavily.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Rusev throws a body punch but Diaz moves out of range.
Diaz is looking to clinch.
Diaz fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Rusev avoids it really well and circles away.

Rusev shoots in for a takedown but Diaz shows good takedown defense.

Rusev instigates a clinch.
Rusev drops down for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Diaz jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Rusev walks away with a smile on his face. Diaz gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.

Rusev gets tackled into the cage by Diaz. Diaz maintains the clinch.

Diaz pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Diaz scores with a head kick. Rusev tried to block it but didn't get his arm up in time.

It looks like Miro Rusev has been cut.
Diaz lands a jab. Then a cross. Then finally a nice hook to the body. Good work there by Diaz.

Rusev is rocked!

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Diaz shoots in looking for a takedown but Rusev manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Diaz's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.
Rusev shapes to counter with a head kick.
Rusev is still on wobbly legs! Can Diaz finish him?
Rusev shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Diaz but Diaz pushes him off and we're back to square one.
Rusev seems to have recovered his senses.
Diaz cracks Rusev with a good jab.
Nice takedown defense from Rusev. No joy for Diaz on that attempt.
Diaz misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Rusev.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Rusev doesn't succeed with the takedown

and Diaz counters by moving into the clinch.
Diaz tries to land a shot to the body but it's blocked.
Diaz controlling the action here for a moment.

Rusev wants to take the fight to the mat but Diaz manages to get underhooks and keep the fight in the clinch.

Diaz breaks the clinch.
Diaz closes this distance looking for a takedown but Rusev circles away.
Diaz pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Diaz avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Diaz attempts a counter takedown but Rusev avoids it well and moves away.
Rusev throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Diaz.
A little feinted left hand from Diaz on the counter but he doesn't commit to it.

A slapping leg kick lands for Diaz.
Rusev tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Diaz swivels and escapes.

Diaz fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Rusev, pushing him back against the cage.
Rusev has had enough of the clinch but Diaz keeps him there for the moment.
Diaz keeps the fight in the clinch, despite Rusev's efforts to push away.
The referee is keeping an eye on Diaz - much more stalling and he will separate the fighters.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Diaz is working for takedown but Rusev is calmly controlling the position for now.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Dios Diaz dominated that second round.
The cut man is working on Miro Rusev's cut.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! And we move into the final round!

Rusev is trying hard to land a takedown here. Diaz sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.
Diaz moves in looking to clinch but Rusev pushes him off.
Diaz shoots in and drives through. Rusev sprawls well.
Rusev lands a high kick!
Diaz fails with an attempt to clinch.
Diaz takes a step back and watches a body kick go sailing past his mid section.
Diaz shoots in for a takedown but Rusev shows good takedown defense.
A little jabbing left from Rusev on the counter but it doesn't find it's target.

and Diaz counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Diaz.

Rusev fails to pull the fight into his guard.
Rusev is pressed up against the cage. Diaz has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Rusev down to the mat. Rusev avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.
No luck for Diaz with that takedown attempt.
Rusev fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Horrible takedown attempt by Diaz or perhaps it was just good defense by Rusev, which made it look bad.

Diaz tries to keep at a distance but Rusev has taken the fight into the clinch.
Diaz is working for a takedown up against the cage. He can't get it on this occasion though.
Rusev is looking to score with knees to the body. Maybe he'll change it up and go body then head. Diaz is defending well for now.

Rusev pulls Diaz into guard.
Diaz wants to control from the top but Rusev keeps moving.
Rusev is trying to keep Diaz in close.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Rusev had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Diaz defends it easily.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Rusev trying to keep a closed guard but Diaz is proving a slippery customer.
Diaz advances position into side control!
Rusev is working hard to escape and get back to his feet. After a battle for position, Diaz asserts his dominance and retains side control.

Diaz looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Diaz moving around in side mount but really he's just happy to control for now.
Diaz wants to take a breather but Rusev manages to regain guard - a lesson learnt for Diaz.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Rusev looking to hit a scissor sweep but Diaz is one step ahead there.

And that's the end of the fight!
Miro Rusev comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Rusev has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
