This TWGC bout is 1 fifteen minute round in the bantamweight division. Introducing today's competitors. In the red corner, competing out of New York, with a TWGC record of 15 wins and 16 losses; Takeya Aoki! And in the blue corner, fighting out of Hilo, with a TWGC record of 4 wins and 5 losses; Zhang Jun! The judges for this bout are Alexandre Firmino, Edson Gomes and Paulo Santos.
The fighters bow as they face eachother in the middle of the mat and we are under way. Nice takedown defense from Jun. No joy for Aoki on that attempt. Jun dives in and grabs Aoki's left leg, looking for a takedown. Aoki pushes down on Jun's head and hops out. Aoki half commits to a counter takedown before pushing away, out of range. Jun gets the takedown into side control. Score +4 for clean takedown past guard: Aoki (0) vs (4) Jun Aoki stops Jun from passing to mount. Jun looks more muscular than last time we saw him. He must have been on the weights. Jun taking a break here but Aoki is having none of it and regains half guard. Aoki is in a tricky position but he's been working on his transitions down at The Proving Grounds, so we'll see if he gets out of it. Jun is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Aoki is just riding it out for now. Jun eventually gives up the hold. Jun trying to pass the guard but Aoki defending well. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Aoki manages to get to full guard.

That's one minute gone in the round. A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Aoki holds on and takes a little breather. Jun trying to control the position from guard on top but Aoki is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Jun trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet. Aoki looking to control the pace of the fight rather than finish it. Aoki's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground. Aoki looking to sweep here. No luck so far. Jun controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling. Aoki looking to hit a scissor sweep but Jun is one step ahead there. Aoki pulls Jun in close to prevent any damage.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Jun stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Aoki swivels though and keeps the full guard. Jun is still trying to improve position. Aoki is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent. Aoki wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now. Jun tries to free his leg and advance position but Aoki is retaining full guard. Jun trying to control but Aoki is working from the bottom. Aoki wants to sweep here but Jun controlling him for the moment. Aoki trying to keep a closed guard but Jun is proving a slippery customer.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Jun trying to control but Aoki is working from the bottom. Jun drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Aoki manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Jun has Aoki in his guard. Score +2 for sweep to guard / half guard: Aoki (2) vs (4) Jun Jun looking for a sweep. Not yet Jun, not yet.

Aoki has a momentary lapse of concentration, allowing Jun to throw up a leg and lock on what appears to be a pretty tight triangle! Aoki is fighting it off but it's all too little too late - Jun pulls down on the head and he's put Aoki to sleep! This one is all over!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:30 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Triangle). Zhang Jun! Zhang Jun decided to hype himself up post fight. It was going well but he went on about it a bit too long and the crowd turned on him a little. The defeated Takeya Aoki had this to say: 'I'm sad. '. |
